Biography

I have thirty years of experience working in the environmental health field. Before working in higher education, I was employed by various local authorities through England, lastly as a Head of Service. I have also worked internationally within the oil industry in environmental health and loss prevention.

I occasionally work as a consultant for local housing associations, for either staff development or expert witness case. I am also a consultant to the Office of National Statistics, employed as part of the English Housing Survey.

Your Thoughts About Online Learning

I am particularly interested in the use of online learning to enhance professional practice and competence. I was one of the University’s first users of the Second Life platform, used to create a virtual environmental for students to practice and enhance their domestic risk assessment tools. The use of this platform won sufficient funding to be rolled out to other programmes and earned a University of Derby award for the use of innovative technology in learning.

I am also keen to help students utilise their professional work based experience to benefit the learning process. This has enabled us to develop new modules which directly use students work experience to shape their own assessment goals and submissions.
