As the University of Derby prepares for the start of the new academic year, it has announced that its city Unibus 4, 5, 6 and 7 services will become completely free for students and staff.

The University has invested more than £300,000 to improve the Unibus waiting times, increase capacity and eliminate the cost of travelling to University by bus.

As part of the improved service, which starts on Monday 11 September, a new shuttle bus (route 7) to connect the city’s eight halls of residence will be launched.

An additional morning bus from the train station to the Kedleston Road Campus and extra Park and Ride spaces at Markeaton Park will also be available and come as a direct result of the feedback given by students and staff in a recent travel survey undertaken by the University

The University is keen to support the free service and anticipates that this will benefit the environment by reducing the reliance on cars for transport, deliver financial savings for those travelling to and from the University and lower demand for car parking.

James Brown, Transport and Travel Manager at the University, said: “We are really pleased to be launching a free bus service for our staff and students in Derby, with the aim of making it a great experience and as easy as possible for them to access our campuses.

“The results of our survey highlighted areas where we could really improve the service we offer and we believe this is a great step in acting on the messages we were given. To reduce boarding times, our students and staff will simply need to show their ID badges and we have increased the number of buses per hour to allow more people to use the service at peak times.

“Last year more than 470,000 trips were made on our Unibus service, so the move to make it a free service with additional routes, represents a significant investment from the University and we are be looking forward to seeing how these improvements are received.”
