Lord William Burlington has been named as the fourth Chancellor of the University of Derby.

William Cavendish, Earl of Burlington, is the son of Peregrine Cavendish, who is the 12th Duke of Devonshire and current Chancellor of the University. William Burlington’s career began in photography. After studying under Jorge Lewinski, he worked for eight years as a portrait photographer before setting up Jasmine Photographic Studios Ltd.

After his grandfather died in 2004, Lord Burlington began to devote more time to his family’s businesses, at Chatsworth in Derbyshire, Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire, and particularly at Lismore Castle in Co. Waterford, Ireland.

Among other responsibilities he is Chairman of the Devonshire Educational Trust, which oversees approximately 20,000 educational visits per year. He also chairs the family’s sustainability and social responsibility steering group.

William said: “It is a privilege and an honour to take on the role of Chancellor at the University of Derby.  I am passionate about education and I am excited about being part of a university which offers opportunities for students from all backgrounds to reach their potential, succeed in life and contribute to society.  I am thrilled to be able to play a small role in this overall experience. The University is such a tremendous asset to the city of Derby and the county of Derbyshire and I look forward to promoting all three through this association.”

Professor Kathryn Mitchell, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Derby said: “We are delighted that William is going to be our next Chancellor. His interest and commitment to the value of learning opportunities and the barriers this can overcome, together with his business experience and personal qualities of humility and dignity, make him an excellent role model for our students.”

Aside from family business and charitable pursuits, Lord Burlington’s passions are art, heritage, education, sport and his family. William is married to fashion editor and stylist, Laura Cavendish, and they have three children.

Lord Burlington will take over the ‘ambassadorial’ role of Chancellor at the University when his father completes his ten year tenure with Derby in early 2018.
