This year’s annual Buxton to Derby bike ride will take place on Friday July 3 to raise money for the Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal.

The BBC Radio Derby presenter, died in April at age 33, after a long battle against melanoma.

The University of Derby is celebrating the 11th year of its annual bike ride, in which time there have been more than 600 entrants, with over £25,000 raised and 27,000 miles cycled.

James Brown, Transport and Travel Manager at the University of Derby said: “Our annual bike ride is an event we look forward to every year and this year more so as we have changed the route. It’s a great way for our staff to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful surroundings in between our two campuses.

“This year we hope to raise £5,000 for the Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal. Colin was well known at the University and we hope this will help to raise awareness and funds for the charity.”

Rob Fowler, Team Co-ordinator in Student Wellbeing (Business and Student Services department) at the University of Derby, added:“I took part in the bike ride last year and I am very much looking forward to it this year. It was a great opportunity for staff at the University to support some local charities whilst exploring often unseen parts of Derbyshire. The organisation and route support on the day is excellent.

“I think it’s great we are supporting the Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal this year. Colin did some great work in the local and wider community and was very well thought of. Anything the University can do to continue and support his work will be great.”
