Art Therapy with Military Veterans: Trauma and the Image

Venue University of Derby, Kedleston Road, DE22 1GB

Event date: Tuesday, 19 June 2018 at 7.30 PM
Running until: Tuesday, 19 June 2018 at 9.00 PM

Janice Lobban, Senior Art Psychotherapist at the UK veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress, will speak about the role that art therapy can play in recovery from psychological trauma.

Since its birth in the regeneration that followed the Second World War, art therapy has a history of helping war wounded to express and work through traumatic experiences. In this talk, contemporary veterans’ images will be used to illustrate key themes that emerge during treatment. The images are seen to enable meaning-making and to facilitate the cognitive shifts necessary for trauma processing.
