Colliding Continents lecture A Geological Exploration of the Himalaya

Event date: Wednesday, 4 February 2015 at 5.00 PM

Venue: University of Derby, Kedleston Road, DE22 1GB

Room: Lecture Theatre OL2

About this event:

Professor Mike Searle, a geologist at the University of Oxford and one of the most experienced field geologists of our time, will present a rich account of the geological forces that were involved in creating the world’s greatest mountain range.

Using his personal accounts of extreme mountaineering and research in the region, he will piece together the geological processes that formed such impressive peaks. His talk will appeal to all those with an interest in popular science, as well as geologists, geographers, mountaineers, and trekkers.

This lecture is free to attend and no advance booking is required. Mike Searle has previously written on the Himalaya in his book, ‘Colliding Continents’, which pieces together the story of the greatest continental collision in Earth history, alongside his own experience of having walked, climbed and scrambled over virtually every inch of it.
