Football and Specialist Sport Journalism students were given a unique opportunity to interview Derby County Head Coach John Eustace as part of a professional pre-match press conference ahead of the Rams’ Championship fixture against Ipswich Town.

More than 50 students from the University of Derby questioned John Eustace on player fitness, match-day tactics and transfer news during Derby County’s weekly pre-match press conference, which was specially hosted at the University’s Kedleston Road site.

This event was attended by representatives from the Club and professional media, giving students direct exposure to the demands of football media coverage.

Chris Hall, Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Derby, said:

“This event provided students with true industry experience, enhancing their employability and CVs, and representing another important step on their journey towards becoming professional sports journalists.

“To have John Eustace on campus to deliver his pre-match press conference, and inviting students to ask him questions, was incredibly exciting and reflects the innovative ways in which the University of Derby and Derby County continue to maximise our partnership.”

Ella Barber, a third-year Football Journalism student who had the opportunity to put her questions forward, said:

“It was great to have the chance to practise our skills during a professional press conference.

“This will help me to be more confident when in a similar situation in my future career. This kind of experience is so valuable.”

Rams Head Coach John Eustace added:

“The questions asked were excellent. It is great to see some exciting, budding journalists and I wish them all the best for the future.

“It is really important that, as a football club, we have a strong relationship with the community and that includes the University of Derby.”

The press conference forms part of the University of Derby’s partnership with Derby County Football Club, which offers students a range of educational, work experience and industry engagement opportunities.

Every year, applicants are given the opportunity to visit Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium for a behind-the-scenes insight into the world of professional sport, with the chance to attend a Q&A with a panel of sport business experts hosted by Rams TV.

Earlier this season, Sports Science students and staff supported the men’s first team by conducting pre-season assessments. The University of Derby is also the front-of-shirt sponsor for Derby County Women, further reinforcing a partnership focused on industry engagement and career development.
