University of Derby develops Accounting and Finance Higher Apprenticeship

28 May 2015

The University of Derby has announced plans to introduce a Higher Education Apprenticeship Degree (HEAD) route to achieving a professional accounting qualification and Masters degree in Accounting and Finance simultaneously, with access to student finance throughout.

Working with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and Sage, Derby will ensure that, as one of only two institutions in the UK to offer this course, it is fit for the needs of the industry.

Jonathan Mills, who joined the University of Derby in January this year, is on the national BIS Trailblazer Committee for Accounting and the Strategy Implementation Committee of the ACCA. He is running the HEAD development project in this field and is asking for more businesses in the East Midlands to get involved and have a say in its content and assessment.

Talking about the course, Jonathan said: “The idea of earning and learning that came out of research the Government had commissioned is spot on. Having students learning and contributing to the economy at the same time is very efficient and productive. Higher apprenticeships like this one at Derby are a great way for students, employers and higher education institutions to bridge skill gaps together.”

Higher education accounting evening

Businesses of all sizes are invited to attend the Accounting and Finance Higher Apprenticeship employer information evening on June 17, at the University’s Kedleston Road site.

The evening will run between 5.30-7.30pm and will give businesses the chance to find out how this new Higher Education Apprenticeship Degree route can benefit them, take an in-depth look at the Integrated Masters in Accounting and Finance and talk to local and national experts about what it can offer them.

Jonathan will be talking at the event along with Linda Hanson, Senior Account Manager at the ACCA, Nick Woodrow, Regional Account Manager at the AAT, and Abdullah Wamala, Professional Services Consultant at Sage.
