Budgeting for university

Before we start to think about budgeting, let's take a closer look at your investment. What are you main outgoings going to be? Tuition fees and living costs. Here’s a quick guide to these and how to plan for them.

Tuition fees

This is what you pay for your studies. Our annual tuition fees for 2020/21 are £9,250 per year for UK and EU full-time students. These fees are regulated by the UK government and may change each year in line with government policy.

Fees for international students vary slightly depending on your course, but are between £14,045 and £14,700 per year for students enrolling in 2020/21.

Living costs

You’ll need to budget for your living costs too. These will include:

So, adding that up, you are looking at between about £180 and £230 a week for your living costs.

Don’t forget to budget for any course materials, books and fieldtrips that are not included in your course fees. These can vary so it’s best to check with your course leader.

To help with the cost of studying, UK students can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. It’s quick and secure to apply online. You won’t make any repayments until you have graduated and your salary has reached a specific level. If you never reach that level you won’t pay anything back.

UK students can also apply for a student Maintenance Loan to help with living costs. You can find more details on our undergraduate fees and finance page. And, for the latest government information, check out student finance on the gov.uk website.
