Dowlow Quarry Teacher Encounter

We’re building new futures

We collaborated with EMCCA Careers Hub have collaborated and Breedon Group to provide an opportunity for teachers to engage directly with leading Buxton employer to learn about the different career pathways relevant to their subjects, and to observe how their subject is applied practically in the minerals industry.

We designed an empowering experience that broadens teachers' understanding of diverse career possibilities, brings curriculum subjects to life, and helps inspire and guide students toward a future they may not have imagined.

Empowering teachers to inspire young people

With research from the Sutton Trust showing that only 6% of teachers feel their training prepared them to support students’ career development, this event was a timely step forward. Teachers, as some of the most influential voices in a young person’s decision-making, left equipped with practical resources and fresh inspiration to embed impartial careers guidance into the classroom.

The event was delivered in partnership with Breedon Group, who are not only growing their apprenticeship programme but also striving to build a more diverse workforce. By engaging with local schools, Breedon is raising awareness of the exciting pathways into the minerals industry, breaking down stereotypes, and highlighting the skills young people need to thrive as part of the future workforce.

The day showcased the breadth of opportunities within the industry, challenged assumptions, and most importantly, gave teachers actionable ideas to make learning more relevant and connected to the world of work.

Impact delivered

Feedback highlighted the value of this engagement:

“Thank you for the opportunity to attend and tour the quarry today. Great to learn about the extensive opportunities in the industry and demand for future employment opportunities.” – Chesterfield College.

We will continue working together to build on this momentum, ensuring long-term impact for schools and students and widening access for even more teachers and learners across the region.
