Rhianna's Journey to the GB Cycling Team

From Sprints to the Saddle: How a passion for sport, a bold move to Derby University, and the right support for Rhianna Parris-Smith helped her shift gears into elite track cycling.

Early Days in Sport

My sporting journey began with athletics, where I focused on sprint events and occasionally helped out in field events to make up the numbers. I was always active, taking part in multiple sports throughout my childhood and school years.

Discovering Cycling at College

When it was time to choose a college, I attended an open day at Oaklands College, known for its wide range of sporting academies. I knew my athletics career was nearing its end due to recurring knee issues, however after always having an interest in cycling, I explored the cycling academy and decided to give the trial day a go, even though I had minimal knowledge of the sport.

It's safe to say I was the worst one there with hardly any knowledge of the sport, but the head coach, Jez, saw potential in me despite my inexperience, and I began my journey into track cycling while also building up countless miles and endurance on the road.

Everyone at Team Derby was so accommodating, and everything was so accessible - the gym, accommodation, coaching, and the velodrome were all within reach. It made balancing training and study so much easier.

Choosing Derby: The Perfect Fit

After college, I worked a few jobs and didn’t initially plan to go to university. But encouragement from friends and family made me reconsider, especially with Derby offering the unique combination of a great academic experience and proximity to the velodrome.

I enrolled at the University of Derby and moved to the city, excited to continue my development in track cycling whilst gaining a degree. Living in on-site accommodation and training at nearby facilities made the transition smooth, plus I was fortunate to receive a scholarship in my first year which made the transition even easier.

Joining the GB Cycling Team

In October 2021, I entered the 'From Home 2 The Games' talent transfer scheme. I was successful in completing all of the phases and was then selected to join the Great Britain Cycling Team in 2022. To make the most of the opportunity, familiarise myself with a new environment and be successful, I decided to take a year out from my studies.

The University, Team Derby, and my tutors were fully supportive of this decision and my new venture, always keeping in contact throughout my time away from studies and ultimately helping to plan my eventual return.

Returning to Complete My Degree

After a successful year on the national squad, I returned to Derby to complete my final year on a part-time basis. This flexible approach allows me to continue training at a high level while working toward my degree.
