Health and fitness at Derby

Our health, wellbeing and sports activities are available to all University of Derby students and staff members throughout the year and provide a range of opportunities to be active in a friendly, social environment.

Our fantastic Sports Centre at the Derby campus provides a wide range of gym, fitness and sports activities. If you join the Sports Centre, your membership includes use of the gym, our class/activity timetable, courts and pitches, but non-members are also welcome and can access a range of facilities and classes on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The Sports Centre offers a choice of over 30 fitness and social sport sessions each week. The classes and activities are suitable for all abilities and levels of fitness.

As part of the annual student and staff membership you also have access to over 90 other university gyms around the country at no extra cost through the BUCS UNIversal scheme, a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) initiative to help you stay active all year round.

If football is your passion, our long-standing social six-a-side football league runs during term time between October and April. You can register a team for this year's leagues in either September or January.

We are working hard to bring our recreational football leagues back to campus this term. The safety of all our students and staff remains a priority and we are therefore ensuring our league format and delivery is compliant with government and FA guidance before re-starting.
Our planned re-start date will be Wednesday 14 or Wednesday 21 October.

Team Derby's friendly six-a-side league competition runs between October and April each year. Our leagues are open to students and staff at the University and are mixed gender.

Team registration for the 2020 autumn term competition is via the online shop

  • When: Wednesdays 4pm to 6.30pm
  • Where: University of Derby Sports Centre Astroturf Pitch
  • Cost: £100 per team

Format

  1. Our leagues are six-a-side
  2. Teams require a minimum of six players (max of ten players) per team with a named captain and an original team name
  3. There are up to 12 team places available in the autumn term league
  4. Competition will run for six to eight weeks (depending on the number of entries)
  5. The autumn league starts in October and spring league in February
  6. Matches are 40 minutes long (two halves of 18 minutes with a four-minute interval).
  7. Kick-off times will be staggered to space out the arrival and departure times of teams Teams should therefore be flexible and able to play anytime between 4pm-6.30pm 

How to get involved 

  1. Get together your team of six to ten players, nominate a team captain and choose your team name
  2. Register and pay your team entry fee via the Online Shop to secure your place
  3. Team places are allocated are on a first-come, first-served basis
