Fitness, wellbeing and social sport

There is a wide choice of gym, fitness, sport and wellbeing activities on campus, so you're sure to find something that you can enjoy.

Health and fitness at Derby

Our health, wellbeing and sports activities are available to all University of Derby students and staff members throughout the year and provide a range of opportunities to be active in a friendly, social environment.

Our fantastic Sports Centre at the Derby campus provides a wide range of gym, fitness and sports activities. If you join the Sports Centre, your membership includes use of the gym, our class/activity timetable, courts and pitches, but non-members are also welcome and can access a range of facilities and classes on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The Sports Centre offers a great choice of fitness classes and social sport activities each week. All our classes and social sport activities are suitable for all abilities and levels of fitness.

If football is your passion, our long-standing social six-a-side football league runs during term time between October and April. You can register a team for this year's leagues at the start of each term, normally September or January.

As part of the annual student and staff membership you also have access to over 90 other university gyms around the country at no extra cost through the BUCS UNIversal scheme, a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) initiative to help you stay active all year round.

Social Sport and Campus Leagues

Team Derby's friendly six-a-side league competition normally runs between October and April each year. The league is open to students and staff at the University and is mixed gender.

Term 3 Competition - We are working hard to bring our recreational football league back to campus in mid-April for the final term of the current academic year.

The safety of all our students and staff remains a priority and we are therefore required to ensure our league is fully compliant with government and FA guidance before we can re-start.

Our planned start date is Friday 16 April. The league will run for 5 weeks.

  • When: Friday afternoons from 3.30pm to 6.00pm
  • Where: University of Derby Sports Centre -  Astroturf Pitch
  • Cost: £45 per team

If you wish to enter a team for this term please confirm your interest by email and follow our updates on Facebook and Twitter

If there is additional demand, we have reserved Wednesday afternoons from 3.30-6.00pm to run a separate league, commencing Wednesday 21 April.
