Derby Moves

Derby Moves is a mobile app for University of Derby students and staff that earns you rewards for being active.

Whether you’re walking to lectures, going for a jog or training at the gym, you can earn points through Derby Moves. Once you’ve collected enough points, you can use them to redeem a variety of rewards and prizes ranging from a hot drink to a hoodie.

It's completely free - all you need to do is download the Moves+ app and confirm which activity tracker device you use.

How to sign up

Go to the App Store or Google Play and search for Moves+ 

  1. Download the Moves+ app
  2. Open the app and select the University of Derby from the drop-down list
  3. Register your details, entering all the required information (this must include your University of Derby email address)
  4. Go to your Uni email address to verify it
  5. You now have the option to connect your wearable device or tracker and add a profile picture (you can skip this step and come back to it later if you wish)
  6. Once you have registered and successfully logged in, you can start using the app

Frequently asked questions

No, Derby Moves is completely free. We are offering the Moves+ app to help motivate students and staff at Derby to stay active during their busy schedules.

Moves+ can connect directly with the following trackers and wearables:

  • Apple Health (iOS devices only) – no wearable device required
  • Google Fit – no wearable device required
  • Strava – no wearable device required (recommended for cyclists and runners)
  • Fitbit – you’ll need to purchase a Fitbit wearable device (Fitbit Charge 3 or above), and a Fitbit tracker is recommended for swimmers
  • Withings (Health Mate app) – you’ll need to purchase a Withings wearable device
  • Garmin 

You can connect most other trackers/apps to Moves+ via one of the above trackers but we’d recommend using Google Fit or Apple Health rather than an unsupported tracker.

Yes, you will need to connect to a simple step-tracker or wearable device to track your activity and collect points such as Apple Health or Google Fit

Derby Moves is also available to students (HE) and staff at our Buxton and Chesterfield sites. And if you are studying a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree online at Derby, you are also able to use the app.

You can join groups and challenges or create private groups with friends to enjoy being part of the Derby Moves community. However, there are some limitations - only certain rewards are available at Buxton and Chesterfield or if you are studying online.

No. You can only connect to Derby Moves with one tracker at a time.

On sign-up you will be invited to connect a tracker of your choice. If you choose to skip this step you can still connect a tracker at another time - within ‘edit profile’ in the app.

To change trackers you must first remove the tracker you have connected. This is done via ‘edit profile’ in the app. Tap ‘remove tracker’ then ‘connect tracker’ and follow the steps.

The Moves+ app currently tracks:

  • steps walked
  • miles run
  • miles cycled
  • metres swum

However, please note:

Moves+ does not collect data associated with any other activities so, if your tracker/wearable allows you to log different types of activity (eg weights or rowing), then any steps recorded during this activity will not be collected by Moves.

Not all trackers have the ability to track swimming:

  • Apple Health needs an Apple Watch
  • Strava and Google Fit require a waterproof phone
  • Fitbit - only certain models which allow for swimming and GPS capability
  • Moves+ is currently unable to read swimming activity on Withings

The trackers sync daily with your Derby Moves account. All connected trackers, apart from Apple, will sync with Moves at 23:55 (11:55pm) and pull through all your activity for that day. Your activity is then converted into points.

Apple Health will only sync activity when you open the Moves+ app. If you don’t open the Moves+ app, any points earned will be rolled over. We recommend that you open your app every day.

For new users tracking with Google, Fitbit and Withings, you will need to open your tracking app in order to sync through the activity. Please note it will take at least a day for the first sync with Moves+.

Garmin - if you're using Garmin you are not able to manually sync activity. Your tracker will automatically sync when new data is sent from Garmin. (Garmin sends Moves+ data when the user completes an activity - typically every hour or so). You will get updated points when your Garmin syncs with Moves+ or in the overnight sync.

Rewards range from hot drinks and food offers to discount codes, free classes and Derby Moves merchandise. Once you have signed up to Derby Moves, all the rewards available to you will be visible on the Rewards tab in the app.

Some rewards may be made available as part of a specific promotion or event or may be available on the app for a limited period of time only. Whilst we try to offer some drink, food and merchandise rewards throughout the year, there may be occasions when an item is out of stock. Please check availability on the app before trying to redeem.

To see what rewards are currently on offer, simply go to the Rewards tab in the app. You can redeem a reward once you have enough points.

Rewards are either available to claim at a shop or point of sale or online via a discount code. Details are given in the reward description on the app:

  • Point of Sale rewards - take your phone to the till point, show your phone screen to the member of staff present as you view and accept the claim 
  • Discount Code rewards - redeem the reward on your phone, make a note of the code, then to claim/apply the discount, enter the code on a website or provide it to the retail assistant/staff, whichever is required

Please note: We will always endeavour to keep rewards available up until their finish date. However, we reserve the right to remove or withdraw rewards at any time. 

If you are you are studying a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree online at Derby, you will be able to redeem any online reward currently on offer - e.g. discount code for DerbyUnion online shop

Unfortunately, you will not be able to redeem your points for rewards that are claimed at a point of sale, such as Moves merchandise or food and drink offers which are only available at campus-based outlets.

You can browse all live and upcoming challenges on the app - on your device, tap the Explore button and then tap Challenges to see what's available.

We also post notifications on the app and on social media when a new challenge is starting. You will need to turn your device notifications on and/or follow @teamderby  #Derbymoves

You can only join challenges that are live. Click the ‘Join’ button to take part. Activity will be counted from when you join the challenge onwards.

Yes, you can - however, you can’t join the same type of challenge, e.g. you can’t compete in two ‘step’ challenges concurrently.

Yes, you can connect with your University of Derby friends on the app.

You can send them a friend request if they are already a Moves+ user. If they are not already using DerbyMoves you can get yourself an extra 50 points if you invite them to join and they sign up! Just head to the ‘Explore’ tab and select ‘People’ to add friends.

Once you have connected as friends you can check out where you sit amongst your friends on the leader board. You can even create your own private groups where you can work towards collective goals.
