Requesting remote study

We look forward to you joining us on campus. However, we understand that some countries around the world are experiencing challenges in terms of travel and visas. Here you can find out if you can start your course through remote study and how to request this.

All of our courses are being delivered on campus and we expect all students to join us. We have put in several measures to ensure our students remain safe, including a Covid testing centre on campus. For international students, we understand that there continues to be challenges and travel restrictions due to the global pandemic and this can impact your ability to travel to the UK on time to start your course.

For the Academic Year 2021/2022, if you’re facing transport restrictions, for example where Government guidance does not permit travel due to international restrictions (e.g. internationally domiciled students), you can request to study remotely.

We can only offer the opportunity to request starting your programme through remote study for selected courses. You will need to request remote study after you enrol. Please note that your request may not automatically be granted and international students in the UK with a visa are not permitted to remote study under new UKVI guidance.

Before you make a decision, we encourage you to talk to your Personal Academic Tutor or Personal College Advisor if you are worried about your circumstances and how they might affect your studies.

If you are studying a course that is not listed below, this will not be available for remote study and you will need to travel to Derby to enrol by the latest date.

Courses available for remote study requests

Please find your college to view all undergraduate and postgraduate courses that can offer remote study for January 2022. If you are studying a course that is not on the list, this will not be available for remote study, and you will be expected to travel to Derby as usual.

Please note that not all courses are available to international students, and some are not available to first-year students.

Criteria for requesting remote study

We will normally only agree to remote study if:

It is expected that you will travel to the University as soon as possible. It is not expected that you will study remotely for any longer than is needed due to the external delays listed above.

Note that remote study will not normally be granted if your rationale is that you are concerned for your safety. The University complies with all requirements to keep its students safe, and all courses are being delivered on campus.

How to apply for remote study

If your course is not available for remote study, you will be expected to travel to Derby to start your course on-campus or withdraw your application.
