About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for you to join our dedicated technical services team in the College of Science and Engineering. As a technician you will ensure the technical resources are deployed and developed to support the co-ordination, preparation and running of specialist classes and fieldwork for students studying the Built and Natural Environment. You will work closely with academic and technical teams and you'll be required to support a range of activities including undergraduate projects, fieldwork, teaching, research and outreach activities whilst promoting good practice and ensuring safety compliance.  You will provide good opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction and evolving changes within the School of Built and Natural Environment.

Principal accountabilities

  1. Provide Technical support for practical classes and research in Built and Natural Environment.
  2. Help maintain the efficient operation and orderly appearance of the Discipline work areas, in particular the soil mechanics facility, Environmental field equipment and associated resources.
  3. Provide technical support in the areas of soil mechanics/testing and/or GIS remote sensing.
  4. Provide relevant technical assistance for student projects.
  5. Assist with supervision and training of trainee technicians.
  6. Construct and/or install new apparatus and equipment, maintain existing apparatus as appropriate.
  7. Help to maintain material stocks, spares etc. and report deficiencies to the Senior Technician.
  8. Demonstrate in relevant practical classes as required.
  9. Provide technical assistance to other areas of the College as required by the Technical Team Leader or Technical Manager.
  10. Undertake appropriate technician development programmes.
  11. Ensure local compliance with all relevant Health and Safety regulations and policies.
