Technical Services

Technical Services at the University of Derby underpins the key activities of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and innovation. As an applied University we value the importance of practical work and experimental learning.  Our highly skilled Technicians from across all areas of the organisation play a vital part in delivering the very best student experience, developing research activity and contributing to innovation. Central to the success of our Technical Service is collaboration, teamwork and knowledge sharing.  

Technical colleagues within the College of Science and Engineering support a wide range of specialist resources and activities. Working independently and in collaboration with academics, our technicians play an important role in advancing the work in many of our academic disciplines. We support specialist areas such as laboratories, workshops and controlled environments. We also provide specialist support for Research Centres such as the Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering (IISE), East Midlands Institute of Technology (EMIOT) and the Nuclear Skills Academy (NSA).

Many of our highly skilled technical staff members hold PhDs and Degrees in disciplines associated with the specialisms they deliver. An increasing number of our technicians have been recognised for their contribution to teaching and student support as Fellows and Associate Fellows of Advance HE. A number also hold professional accreditation status through organisations such as the Science Council, which establishes knowledge, understanding and competence. 

You will support academic, research, and operational activities within Engineering and provide expertise in the maintenance, repair, design, and assembly of electronic systems and laboratory equipment. Working closely with the academic team, researchers, and students, you will ensure all electronic equipment and experimental setups are fully functional, safe, and fit for purpose. This role combines hands-on technical work with problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration across science and engineering.

As Technical Instructor, you will provide specialist advice and technical support relating to the design, construction, and testing of electronic systems and devices. This includes working across several laboratories with a high degree of autonomy, while also providing additional technical support across the College of Engineering as required.

You should hold qualification(s) equivalent to a degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or possess comparable knowledge and transferable skills gained through relevant professional experience.

The ideal candidate will have significant specialist technical experience in electronic systems and instrumentation, preferably gained within an industrial, research, or educational environment. You will be proficient in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of electronic equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, soldering/rework stations, and circuit testing apparatus.

You will have a solid understanding of analogue and digital electronics, circuit assembly, and testing procedures alongside experience of microcontroller-based systems.

  1. Undertake any technical work related to our electronics technology provision. This will include general lab maintenance; preparation of space in line with teaching requirements; development of resource area and maintaining safe systems of work.
  2. To assist with the management and deployment of the area’s technical staff, where appropriate, ensuring the most effective use of technical resources.
  3. Maintaining effective liaison with the technical team, academic and administrative staff to provide the best use of resources and staff.
  4. To develop and deliver appropriate schemes of instruction relevant to resource area through close liaison with academic staff and Technical Team Leader.
  5. Managing the organization and maintenance of equipment and workshop spaces in the area including equipment asset registers and ensuring compliance with all relevant Health and Safety regulations and policies.
  6. Providing technical assistance, student supervision and guidance as agreed with the line manager.
  7. Providing technical assistance related to apprenticeship delivery.
  8. Providing input and advice on the forward planning of resources.
  9. To assist and support research and knowledge transfer work by providing technical knowledge in appropriate resource areas.
  10. Managing technical area budgets in accordance with the University’s Financial Regulations.
  11. Assisting in the selection, recruitment and induction of new technical staff in line with the University’s Procedures.
  12. Attending relevant committee meetings as agreed with the Technical Team Leader.
  13. Participating in the University’s staff Development Review and engaging in personal staff development to ensure a current awareness of relevant technology as agreed with the relevant Technical Team Leader.
  14. Undertaking any other duties as required in agreement with the Technical Team Leader/ Technical Manager.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

  • Degree in related discipline, or equivalent experiential learning in a related subject

Experience

  • Successful practical experience in the vocational area of Electrical/Electronics Engineering
  • Knowledge and experience of circuit design and assembly, electrical components and test bench equipment

Skills, knowledge & abilities

  • Ability to use electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators
  • Able to design and build electronic circuits and systems
  • Ability to prepare, maintain and repair equipment and resources
  • Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
  • Knowledge and ability to program embedded microcontroller systems
  • Knowledge of current industry practices
  • Knowledge of workshop health and safety practices
  • Ability to consistently provide a high-quality learning experience for all students/trainees
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate high levels of job performance
  • Ability to make a positive contribution to the team, valuing colleagues’ particular professional expertise and respecting other members of the team as individuals
  • Demonstrable ability to organise own workload to meet deadlines and targets with minimum supervision

Business requirements

  • Willingness to provide support at University events from time to time e.g., Graduation, Clearing and Open Days, (some of these events occur outside of normal working hours, such as evenings and weekends)
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel and work between University sites in a cost effective and timely manner

Experience

  • Experience in supporting research, teaching, or industrial collaboration in an academic or professional environment
  • Experience of designing, analysing and troubleshooting electrical systems

Skills, knowledge and abilities

  • Proficiency in using engineering software for design and simulation (e.g., Proteus, Matlab, National Instruments, MPLAB)
  • Ability to write technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and laboratory protocols
