About the role

As the Senior Learning Designer, you will lead on maintaining exemplary learning design practice and be an advocate for fully online, interactive learning experiences. With line management responsibilities for the learning design development process, you will work collaboratively with the academic teams and the operations teams.

You will develop procedures and processes to support the online learning and teaching needs across the institution including the credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing portfolio. You will also lead on developing and identifying good practice in relation to learning design and ensuring this is employed across our online learning provision to deliver sector leading practice.

As Senior Learning Designer you will have creative flare and a passion for devising online solutions which excite and engage learners. You will be a key contributor in the design of our approach to online learning.

Principal accountabilities

  1. To lead on developing and identifying good practice in relation to learning design and ensuring this is employed across our online learning provision to deliver sector leading practice including managing learning design resource.
  2. To lead on the coaching approach with academic colleagues across the University, developing relationships with key personnel, to contribute to the development of sector leading, quality online learning content.
  3. To motivate and lead the Learning Design team to propose, formulate or investigate innovative solutions for the needs of academic colleagues based on knowledge and experience of technology enhanced pedagogies and the future direction of the University.
  4. Share pedagogic models and practice to support academic colleagues in their development of innovative learning designs by running training sessions and creating documentation that supports the development of effective online learning.
  5. Provide strong leadership of the way in which Digital Solutions and Services develops and publishes content, significantly influencing academic authors.
  6. Creation of applicable learning design models making best use of the tools and resources available to create relevant learning design and delivery models.
  7. To work with Content Team colleagues to translate the agreed requirements of academics and other colleagues into technical requirements that lead to the development of new methods, products or tools which meet the needs of online students.
  8. Apply design principles and best practice in the production and development of scripts and storyboards for interactions, animations, and other types of rich multimedia assets.
  9. Within the context of the work of the department and team, to liaise with subject experts in relation to the development of content, products, or technologies to ensure they reflect industry requirements as well as academic/student needs.
  10. To liaise closely with academic colleagues who have an innovative project development requirement in order that their needs can be fully understood, documented, and agreed.
  11. To review, in collaboration with academic teams, existing learning content products to understand new / innovative approaches.
  12. To have current knowledge of virtual learning environments and learning management systems to provide advice on key features.
  13. To maintain a working knowledge of usability and accessibility within learning content and other areas.
  14. To manage development activities in accordance with identified parameters (timescales, costs, quality tolerance, etc).
  15. To implement industry wide regulations and standards in relation to developments.
  16. To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably requested by line management to forward the strategy of the University.
