Championing patient safety at Kings Mill
Kings Mill Hospital approached us to develop a practical programme to support individuals leading patient safety within their organisation. The individuals were mainly clinicians, such as doctors, nurses and matrons. The programme was based on a format we’d developed with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement.
Since patient safety roles involve working across organisational boundaries, networking and sharing experiences with others is a crucial element of the course. The aim was that this collaboration would also build confidence and bring about new ideas for developing safety practices. The training covered communications, risk assessment, managing expectations, reporting, challenges being faced and service tools.
The course is delivered to ward staff in a half day session on site, and is followed by two further days’ training with identified ‘champions’ who will provide ongoing mentoring and support after training.
