What are you doing now?

I am currently a Social Worker (Child Protection)

What were the main reasons you took the course?

I wanted to enhance my understanding of the Social Work ethos which would allow me as a practitioner to strive to improve the lives of children/adults. I acknowledge that there will always be people in need, so there will always be a demand for those such as myself who are educated in Social Work.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

I live in Derby and I wanted to continue to work whilst I studied locally. Furthermore, I knew Fran Fuller who was extremely influential in me deciding to study at Derby.

What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?

Having a family, studying locally allowed me to continue to work. Furthermore, it enabled me to get a secondment at Ashtree House ¾ Locality, initially in the Reception Team, and then secured a permanent post in Long Term Team as a Child Protection Social Worker Practitioner.

How did the lecturers inspire you?

The lecturers were always on hand to support and answer my questions. I learnt that I have strengths and weaknesses. It was a challenging three years but the lecturers were invaluable in their support and guidance. The course and work experiences made me aware that it is important to reflect on my practice.

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

Studying at Derby as a mature student I was not fazed to discuss my weaknesses. I challenged myself to achieve my goal and the lecturers at Derby developed my understanding, skills and knowledge necessary to become a professional social worker. Over the three years my studies at Derby equipped me with an understanding of social work values, the law, evidence-informed practice, making professional judgements, and the ability to apply a range of interventions in my Social Work practice. Derby University allowed me to learn and equip me with the tools to become a confident and competent Social Worker Practitioner.

What are your future plans?

To eventually work for Cafcass.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

Jump at the opportunity. The Social Work lecturers show respect for their students. In regard to Fran Fuller and fellow colleagues, they showed interest in both my professional and personal growth, encouraged my independence, and encouraged me to always reflect on my practice to sustain and enhance my practice.
