We know that the cost of study can be a worry for many students and their families. That’s why the University of Derby - Buxton offers a range of financial support options to help cover the costs of travel, meals, equipment, childcare, and more. This page explains what funding is available, how to apply, and what to expect throughout the process.

If you need help completing your application, we strongly recommend booking a bursary appointment.

Financial support for non-apprenticeship students

The University of Derby - Buxton (UODB) offers a range of financial support schemes based on your age, course type, and household circumstances.

All awards are discretionary, dependent on eligibility, available funds, and the submission of a complete application through PayMyStudent.

16 - 18 year olds

If you are aged 16–18 on 31st August, you will not usually pay tuition fees for your course. Most full-time college-level study programmes are fully funded for this age group.

However, you may still have additional costs, including:

  • Travel to and from college
  • Uniforms, kits, and equipment
  • Educational trips
  • Meals while at college
  • Childcare (if applicable)

This is where the college bursary can help support you.

Helps cover extra costs associated with college attendance—travel, equipment, meals, trips, and childcare.

Vulnerable Bursary – Up to £1,200 per year

  • In care or a care leaver
  • Receiving Income Support or Universal Credit in your own name
  • Receiving both ESA and either PIP or DLA

Discretionary Bursary

For households earning £45,000pa or less. Supports:

  • Travel to/from college
  • Uniform, kit, or equipment
  • Educational visits
  • Meal support (if not eligible for free college meals)
  • Childcare support (if under 20, via Care to Learn)

Applications are assessed individually based on financial need and participation costs.

Available for learners aged 16–18, those continuing a programme started 16–18, or 19–25 with an EHCP—who meet certain benefit criteria. Meal allowances are usually confirmed within 3–5 working days with correct evidence. Keep receipts while waiting for confirmation.

19+ year olds

For learners aged 19+ with household income under £45,000pa. Can support:

  • Travel
  • Equipment, uniforms, or kit
  • Educational visits
  • Childcare (for Ofsted-registered providers)

Eligibility assessed based on income and course type. Fully funded courses may qualify automatically.

Financial support for apprentices

This bursary is for eligible apprentices who are in care or are care leavers. It will help remove financial barriers to accessing and completing apprenticeships.

For apprentices starting their apprenticeship on or after 1 August 2023, the bursary will be £3,000. It is payable in instalments over the first year of the apprenticeship. The bursary is only paid once per eligible apprentice, even if they start more than one apprenticeship.

This bursary is not means-tested and is separate from other learner support funds.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be aged under 25 at the start of your apprenticeship
  • Be currently in care or a recognised care leaver (this may include foster care, local authority care, or supported living)
  • Be undertaking an approved apprenticeship programme
  • This bursary is usually arranged through your employer and training provider, and claimed via the apprenticeship service
  • Speak to your employer, apprenticeship tutor, or training provider for help with accessing the LAC bursary

If you have a disability, learning difficulty, or health condition, you may be able to access additional support through:

  • Access to Work – government-funded support that helps with specialist equipment, transport to work, or job coaching
  • Apprenticeship provider learning support – if you need extra help with learning as part of your programme. Speak to your training provider or line manager for guidance.

Some apprenticeship employers may offer additional help such as:

  • Uniform or equipment reimbursement
  • Travel allowances or fuel support
  • Meal vouchers or workplace canteen discounts
  • Professional development funding

It’s always worth asking your HR or apprenticeship contact what internal support is available.

Other financial support

For students under 20 with childcare responsibilities. Covers up to £180 per week per child, retainer fees, deposits, and support during placements or off-site learning.

  • Use an Ofsted-registered provider
  • Provide proof of parental responsibility and age
  • Apply through the bursary team; processed directly by UODB

Available if you have an approved Advanced Learner Loan for a Level 3–6 qualification. Supports:

  • Travel
  • Books, kit, or uniforms
  • Childcare with Ofsted-registered providers
  • Learning support/additional needs

Household income must be under £45,000 to qualify.

Learners living on viable public transport routes are not eligible for direct payments. Instead, they may receive travel pass contributions. Direct payments are for exceptional circumstances and must be evidenced.

If you live in Derbyshire and are aged 16–18, you can apply for the b_line card, which gives you:

  • Discounted bus and local rail travel across Derbyshire and the High Peak
  • Access to discounts at selected local businesses

Apprentices aged over 18 may wish to check if their employer contributes to travel costs or offers other workplace schemes.

TOTUM offers a specific TOTUM Apprentice card, giving access to a wide range of student discounts even if you’re not in full-time education.

Discounts on travel, tech, fashion, food, and more

Valid ID for use in-store and online

Young people aged 16–30 who are unemployed, underemployed, or not in full-time education may receive up to £250 to help with:

  • Equipment or tools for a course
  • Travel for learning or interviews
  • Clothing for placements
  • Exam or accreditation fees

Apply via King’s Trust.

Councils and local charities may offer discretionary grants for essential equipment, emergency transport, and personal development. Contact your Local Authority or Bursary Team for help locating these opportunities.

How to apply for a bursary for University of Derby - Buxton video transcript

Hi, my name is Laura and I'm member of the bursary team for the University of Derby. I'm going to talk you through today how to make an application for one of our bursaries. All of our bursary applications are done through a system called paymystudent.

To get to get to this portal, you can use the QR codes that you've been provided with or alternately I will provide you with the web address at the end of this. So when you first log on to paymystudent, this is the screen that you'll see.

We need to scroll to the bottom of this page. So once you get to the bottom of the previous page is this page that you will see and it's this box that we are interested in. Register for an account with your student ID.

So you'll go to here and put in your student number. You will all have an individual student number. Then put in your date of birth and then you choose a password. Please choose a password that you'll remember and then you confirm the password. After that you'll click register.

Once you click register, paymystudent will send an email to your uni mail account. You'll need to log on to your uni mail account and activate this email. Once you've activated the email from your uni mail, you'll go back to this homepage and that's where we go to the login page. And that's where you'll put in your student number, the date of birth, and that password that you've previously just chosen. But it will not let you log in here unless you've activated the account on your Uni Mail. So, it's really important you do that step.

So once you've got into this login, you'll click to the login and it'll take you to a series of questions. Here it'll ask you questions about yourself and your household income and what bursary you want to apply for. One of the most important things we need to calculate your bursary is a household income. The household income is what? The amount of money that is earned in the house that you live in. Whose household income we need is based on your age. So if you are 16 to 18 years old, it's your parents or guardians proof of household income that we need.

If you are over 19, it's your own income. Even if you live with your parents, it's your own income that we look at. However, if you're over 19 and you live with a partner or spouse, we also need their household income.

Most household income will come as wage slips or universal credit statements. So if you have wage slips, you need to upload these to your pay my student account. If it's universal credit statements, I'm going to make a different video to show you how to do this. One of the questions on the bursary portal that it's going to ask you is what you want to apply for as part of your bursery. It's really important that you tick all of the things that you want to be considered for. So for example, if you want to apply for travel but you don't tick travel, we can't look at awarding that. So please make sure that you do tick all of the items that you want us to consider.

There's a few common mistakes that tend to delay bursary applications. So just going to quickly highlight these to you. So this the application must be signed by yourself at the end. It must be your own bank details and we must be provided with three full months of pay slips or universal council statements. We cannot access assess your bursary application without these things.

So the web address that I've previously mentioned to get to the paymystudent portal is ww.blc.pay student.com. So if you go to that it will go straight to the pay my student portal. I hope that this presentation has helped you in being able to apply for the bursary. If you do need any other help I am more than happy to do that. So here is my personal email address financialsupport@blc.ac.uk - that will come straight to me where I can answer any queries. Alternately you can speak to Stuart or Jack and they can make a team's appointment personally with myself. We can go through if you have any problems.

So I hope you're all enjoying your course and please do let me know if you need any help at all with these applications. Thank you very much for your time.

Parent/Guardian Support Info

We understand the vital role of parents, guardians, and carers in supporting bursary applications for the 2026/27 academic year. Due to GDPR, all bursary communications must be made directly with the student, not parents or guardians.

If you legally manage your child’s affairs (e.g. Power of Attorney), you must provide formal documentation before we can discuss their application.

All bursary updates will be sent to your child’s college email address.

Applications are managed via the cloud-based PayMyStudent accessible on mobile, tablet, or computer. Only enrolled students can log in. Parents/carers cannot access the system unless legally authorised and documented.
