The Level 3 Uniformed and Protective Services course offers an in-depth, practical, and theoretical understanding of careers across both the public and private protective services sectors.

You will develop essential employability skills such as leadership, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, preparing you for a wide range of exciting and meaningful career paths. Through a combination of classroom learning, practical activities, and physical training, you will build the knowledge, confidence, and fitness required to succeed in this demanding but rewarding field.

How you will learn

You will be based primarily at the Devonshire Dome, Buxton Campus, where you’ll take part in a wide variety of engaging learning activities. Lessons will include PowerPoint presentations, group and paired projects, guest speakers, videos, computer-based research, and practical scenarios. Some units may also make use of our excellent facilities, such as the gym, sports halls, and the stunning countryside that surrounds the college.

You will have the opportunity to learn directly from professionals across the uniformed and emergency services. Examples include live demonstrations from police dog handlers, talks from serving officers, and fitness sessions delivered by the Royal Marines. You may also take part in realistic mock incidents, allowing you to apply your new knowledge and skills in practical, hands-on situations.

The skills and knowledge gained on this course are highly transferable and valued across a wide range of careers — both uniformed and non-uniformed. Graduates have gone on to roles in teaching, the local authority, probation, the civil service, the NHS, law, and private security. In today’s competitive job market, this qualification offers a strong advantage and helps your CV stand out from those who have followed traditional post-16 routes.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of four Grade 4 GCSEs including English.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2025, you will not usually pay tuition fees for your course. Most full-time college-level study programmes are fully funded for this age group.

However, you may still have additional costs, including: travel to and from college, uniforms, kits, and equipment, educational trips, meals while at college, childcare (if applicable).
