Why study Supported Internships at Derby?

  • Person-centred approach - this means student progress is measured through demonstrating outcomes, allowing the programme to be tailored to each students needs to support time in achieving a good work and life outcome.
  • On the job experience - Supported Interns have two days placed with a suitable employer where they are supported carefully and systematically to carry out the job to a high standard.
  • Work-ready - supported Internship programme which is designed to allow students to develop their employability skills into an area of their preference and move into work following the completion of the programme.
  • Personal development – During placements students develop their essential communication and inter-personal skills alongside continual studies of digital, maths and English skills.
  • Tailored support - Learners are fully supported at the start of their work placement and gradually offered less support as they progress, so they become more independent through the systematic training carried out by the job coach.
  • Discover next steps – Throughout the programme students will develop their understanding of career options, search for jobs, prepare for interviews so they feel confident in their next steps after completing the programme.

The programme has one primary aim, wherever possible, to support young people to move into paid employment. The Supported Internship Team at University of Derby - Buxton will work closely with the interns, their circle of support, and host employer to ensure optimal opportunity for successfully gaining paid employment (including, where appropriate, self-employment).

Learners are fully supported at the start of their work placement and gradually offered less support, so they become more independent through the systematic training carried out by the job coach.

Students will also work towards developing their work-related and essential communication skills, Health and Safety in the workplace and how to deal with common problems that may occur. Throughout the programme students will develop their understanding of career options, search for jobs, prepare for interviews with a view of progressing into paid work on completion.
