The aim of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business course is to prepare you for progression on to a university degree course, a higher apprenticeship or employment in a wide range of job roles.

This qualification will help you develop your knowledge of business theory and allow you to use your creativity and entrepreneurism.

What you will study

  • Exploring Business – You will study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment, and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive.
  • Developing a Marketing Campaign – You will gain skills relating to, and an understanding of, how a marketing campaign is developed.
  • Personal and Business Finance – You will learn the purpose and importance of personal and business finance and develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, analyse and prepare financial information.
  • Managing an Event - You will work as part of a small group to plan, coordinate and manage a business or social enterprise event and evaluate the skills gained.
  • International Business – You will study how UK businesses develop strategies to trade globally and consider the factors that influence the implementation of these strategies.
  • Principles of Management – You will gain an understanding of how the role of management and leadership in the workplace contributes towards business success.

How you will learn

The BTEC philosophy of ‘learning through doing’ remains at the heart of this qualification. You will use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations and demonstrate your practical and technical skills through role plays and presentations.

This will allow you to apply your skills and knowledge through work experience and practical work.

You will participate in visits to a variety of businesses, such as, the Trafford Centre, Salford Media City, and the University of Derby. These trips will inspire and motivate you, and provide an opportunity for you to engage and interact with industry professionals.

Careers

Students who achieve this qualification could look forward to a future career as a Payroll Administrator, Marketing Assistant, HR Administrator, Customer Service Team Leader, Trainee Business Development Executive, Distribution manager or Logistics manager.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of five grade 4 GCSEs including English and Maths.

Fees and funding

If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2025, you will not usually pay tuition fees for your course. Most full-time college-level study programmes are fully funded for this age group.

However, you may still have additional costs, including: travel to and from college, uniforms, kits, and equipment, educational trips, meals while at college, childcare (if applicable).
