Sustainable Travel

We have had a comprehensive and successful Sustainable Travel Plan since 2003

We are committed to promoting and facilitating travel to our sites by alternatives to sole occupancy cars. We're well regarded for our travel planning which started in 2003 with an initial travel plan for a five-year period. We also have a travel plan for Buxton that has operated successfully since 2005.

Travel survey

In 2007, the University undertook a comprehensive travel survey of staff and students based at its Derby sites. Around 1,300 responses were received. The responses to this survey were used to shape developments in travel, including changes to car parking and the Unibus, as seen in the Travel Plan.

In 2010, 2013 and 2016/17, further surveys were undertaken, which have provided an excellent picture of our positive progress in promoting sustainable travel.

Most recently, we completed the 2016/17 Survey, which included our Buxton Campus, and this has benchmarked progress since 2007. Once again a strong response has enabled us to see that most of our progress has been sustained and in many areas our use of sustainable travel has grown still further.
