I have been able to renew my permit in previous years why can't I this year?
The number of spaces available for student parking at Kedleston Rd has been reduced, therefore it has been necessary to apply a strict criteria when assessing a persons need to park on site. Because of the change in criteria we have asked that any student who feels that they have an exceptional need to park atr Kedleston Road make a brand new application.
What criteria do I need to meet?
To be eligible you will fall into one of the following categories:
- You need a permit on medical grounds or are disabled but do not have a Blue Badge (You will need to provide evidence such as a Doctor’s Letter)
- You’re more than 25 weeks Pregnant (We will need to see your MatB1)
- You’re a Part Time Student and are studying around work or external commitments (We will check your status upon application. Part Time recovery students are not eligible)
- You’re full time and live more than 15 miles away during term time and either have children under the age of 11 and or have caring responsibilities (We will ask for evidence of your circumstances)
How much will it cost?
The Kedleston Road permit is free. But you must pay and display when using the car park. Costs to pay and display are £2.60 for up to 4 hours and £5.20 over 4 hours
Parking is free after 4.30pm on weekdays and free all day at weekends to permit holders
Blue Badge holders and Motorcycles are free
Failure to pay and display may result in you being issued with a parking fine and in extreme cases, we reserve the right to revoke your permit.
I have a Kedleston Road parking permit, can I park at other sites?
There's no student parking at either Britannia Mill or Markeaton Street sites with the exception of Blue Badge Holders. Students who have permits must park at the Kedleston Road site only and either catch a shuttle bus or walk between sites.
Do Motorbikes need permits to park at University Sites?
No, motorbikes do not need a permit and are free to come on to site, using the designated parking shelters provided. Motorbike users will not need to pay and display either. Currently, lockers are available to motorcyclists to store your helmet and kit at Kedleston Road from the transport office for a refundable £20 key deposit. We recommend you visit the Motorcycle pages for further information.
I have a permit for Kedleston Road car park, do I always need to pay & display?
Yes, between 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. You don't need to pay after 4:30pm or at weekends. Please display your parking permit, as well as your pay & display ticket. Without these, you risk being issued with a parking fine.
Why do I need to pay and display at Kedleston Road if I have a permit?
The charges are driven by the need to keep public transport costs lower than car parking. Any surplus income will be declared and reinvested into public transport and other travel plan measures, which will help make alternatives to the car more widely available to people who are travelling to University sites.
What happens if I don't pay and display?
If you don't have a valid permit or are not displaying a pay and display ticket you will receive a Parking Enforcement Notice (PEN). The notice carries a £80.00 cost reduced to £40.00 if paid within 14 days. Details of methods of payments will be included with the Parking Enforcement Notice.
What happens if I do not have the right change to put in the Pay Machine?
Please ask the car park attendant who will be only too happy to help (or you can pay by phone - please see signs for details).
What can I do if I can't afford the car parking charges at Kedleston Road?
We recommend that you seek financial advice from our Student Money Advice and Rights Team (SMART). They are available on the phone between 10am-11am & 1pm-2pm (Monday - Friday, during Teaching Weeks). Alternatively, you can email them: SMART@derby.ac.ukor book an appointment by contacting 01332 593000 for 1-2-1 support.
Please be aware that the Car Parks (at all sites) are free to use after 4:30pm and free to use at weekends.
Why can't full time students park on-site?
Car park spaces are limited and will be prioritsed for disabled students / part time students and those who meet our set criteria for a permit. Please see information on parking alternatives
My friend has a permit, why can't I have one?
For full time students, we assess your eligibility to park on site and prioritise these against the needs of others. Everybody's circumstances will be different and we try to accommodate as best we can, being as fair as we can. Please see the eligibility criteria for more details.
If you have submitted your parking application for a Kedleston Road permit and it has been rejected, you can appeal this decision by supplying new evidence to us.
To discuss your circumstances in more detail with an Advisor, please pop in to your nearest Student Centre or, at busier times, get in touch on 01332 591066 or email email@example.com
There are empty spaces, why didn’t I get a parking permit?
Spaces are allocated in accordance to how many total spaces are available and in line with the eligibility criteria we have set. If you have already applied but were unable to get a permit please contact the Student Centre on 01332 591066 for advice on how to appeal this decision.
We work hard to accommodate as many students with parking spaces as possible but they are extremely limited. There is information on alternatives which you can see here
I am a Blue Badge holder, do I need a parking permit?
You will need a permit for parking, but your permit will allow you access to park at Kedleston Road (all car parks), Britannia Mill and Markeaton Street sites. Having a permit means that the barriers to any of the car parks will lift for you automatically. You do not need to pay & display.
Disabled parking bays are located near the entrances to the building to provide easy access.
You can apply via our online shop.
I have a permit on health grounds but do not have a Blue Badge can I park in a disabled space?
No you must use a normal space in the main student car park and purchase a pay and display ticket. Only blue badge holders can park in a disabled space
What if I'm not eligible for permit on site?
We would always advise that you consider alternatives to the car but we understand that this isn't always possible. If you do need to travel by car, The main student car park is located at Markeaton Park and connects top the campus by free regular shuttle bus (number 4).
I've had an accident which has left me temporarily disabled and I need my car to get around, what can I do?
We recommend that you set up some support with Student Wellbeing Service (located on the ground floor of T-Block, Kedleston Road) so that any necessary arrangements can be made. To make an appointment, please call 01332 593000 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
From here, your Wellbeing Advisor may be able to write a letter to support your application to park at the Kedleston Road site and this can be sent, with your application to the Car Parking team.
Can I Car Share?
Parking permits are issued as one per student and we can't list vehicles that don't belong to you on your permit. We do encourage you to car share and share the cost of car parking - as much as possible though. So if you can give someone (or several people!) a lift and split costs, this will reduce your expenses.
Am I guaranteed a space?
No - spaces are subject to availability, however our car park management company (CP Plus) will endeavour to identify to arriving drivers where spaces are available. With the normal flow of traffic on the site and the controlled issue of permits, it is unlikely that all spaces will be occupied at any one time.
What do I do if I change my car?
Pop in to the Student Centre at Kedleston Road with your permit and your new vehicle details (and Insurance Certificate) and we'd be happy to give you a new permit. You can also email email@example.com with all your new car details and we'll let you know when it's ready to collect.
Why do you need to see my Insurance documents?
This is purely for security and insurance purposes. We treat your data with the strictest confidence under Data Protection guidelines and your information will not be shared with another.
Are there designated areas for disabled drivers?
Yes, there are adequate disabled parking bays throughout the site located to accommodate a variety of easy access points. Our car park management company ensure that these spaces are not abused.
If I can't get a parking permit, I will have to leave the course. What can I do?
If you have already applied for a parking permit but were rejected, we recommend that you appeal that decision with further evidence of your circumstances, outlining why you would need to park on site. Whilst we can't accommodate everybody, we do try our best. We would also advise that you get in touch with your nearest Student Centre to discuss your parking options and what alternatives may be available to you. At busier times, and to avoid queues you may wish to call us on 01332 591066 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
