CivicLAB Symposium aims to explore, discuss and reimagine the value of creative practice to the public sphere with a special focus on the theme of ‘Designing for Civility and Cultural Impact’. The Symposium will explore how we build civic communities and how practitioners and academics create the conditions in which those communities can sustainably develop, innovate, and thrive within the social, economic, environmental, health, wellbeing and cultural challenges of the 21st century.

A keynote speech will be given at the event by Dr Cara Courage who is head of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, (MOCAD). Prior to this, she held the role of Head of Tate Exchange and Interim Co-Director, Learning and Research, Tate, and independent arts and placemaking researcher and publisher. Cara is the author of Arts in Place: The Arts, the Urban and Social Practice (Routledge, 2017), the co-editor of Creative Placemaking and Beyond (Routledge, 2018), and the editor of The Routledge Handbook of Placemaking (Routledge, 2021).

CivicLAB invites colleagues from higher education, the creative industry and public sector, who centre their research and teaching practice on participatory culture, creative dialogue and experiential design for social impact.

  • A CivicLAB roundtable facilitated by Policy Connect
  • 'Amplifying Civic Youth Voice'.This session will focus on the Derby City Youth Voice Review in partnership with British Youth Council, Opportunity Area and Derby City Council. Led by Alix Manning-Jones, Opportunity Area Local Programme Manager, Derby City Council
  • Industry Panel on 'Infusing Culture in our City'
    • Panellists include: Simon Carnell - Head of Community, Derby County Community Trust; Adam Buss, FRSA - Director, Culture Derby; Sandra Booth – Director of Policy, The Council for Higher Education in Art and Design (CHEAD); Catriona Munn – Business Development Manager, Derby Cathedral; Tomar Beh - CEO Mprez, Express U; Anna Lindberg - Cumulus Secretariat; Representatives from Down to Earth; Representatives from the University of Derby; Caroline Barth - Creative Learning Director, Derby Theatre

The CivicLAB team are looking for presenters at the Symposium 2022. If you wish to apply, please complete the registration form below with the required information about the presentation you want to introduce.

Please note, selected presenters will be notified of acceptance by 10 June 2022.
