Jean-Jacques is sometimes mainly remembered as a precursor of the French Revolution. This might have something of a convenience about it stemming from other commentators both at the time and much later on? And he probably wouldn’t have intended such a sudden, serious and radical overhaul of the ancien régime
Nevertheless, he did make a ground-breaking statement in his second Discourse on the Origin of Inequality written in 1754. This may have been, for him, a (marketing) sequel to the First Discourse which came about in rarefied circumstances. The second one is more mature and is the starting point for a salon in 2015.
