Choosing Sociology at Derby
I felt I needed a new personal challenge and was inspired to go to the University of Derby because I thought it would open up more opportunities for me.
I have always performed to the best of my ability in anything I have done but never had a dream career in mind, so when choosing my university course I choose something that genuinely interested me instead of something with a specific end goal. I found Sociology interesting because I felt it would help me to understand the world from different perspectives and open my mind to the challenges and rewards of higher education.
An interesting degree course
Social Sciences at Derby did not disappoint with topics covered within the first year such as ‘Inequalities’, ‘Popular Culture’ and ‘Researching the Social World’. These topics helped to inform me about ways of looking at the social world and how to research it. I felt I gained a well-rounded perception of different and varied social discourses that act upon us in everyday life.
I found this to be extremely interesting because it allowed me to make my own decisions about my social environment and feel informed and empowered enough to actually have an opinion on issues such as politics, social history, health, social class and feminism.
Whilst studying, I did a placement with adults with learning difficulties in my local college and felt this was very worthwhile and also helped to make my C.V stand out a little bit more.
A supportive network
My lecturers were very supportive and friendly throughout the whole process, offering one to one tutorial and pointing me in the right direction of investigation. The facilities at the University of Derby were very good in my opinion; the library was fantastic with lots of areas to work with differing levels of privacy and helpful assistants on hand to help with finding books etc.
The helpful staff, great facilities and excellent course content culminated into my final year dissertation which highlights the injustice faced by individuals who suffer with mental health problems and the subsequent injustice felt by society as a whole.
Gaining employment after study
I currently work for a company called Next Generation Healthcare employed as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities. I worked in this role throughout University but have since changed companies upon graduating. I have more responsibility in my current role but am still actively seeking graduate level employment in areas such as business, health and in the general public sector area.
A rewarding experience
The course in general was very rewarding; I gained a great deal of knowledge that I find helpful both intellectually and on a personal level. The course was pitched at exactly the right level for me. There were times that were more full-on in terms of work load which I think I found to be the most challenging, but this was balanced out by other times that were more relaxed.
I would absolutely recommend completing a degree at the University of Derby because it’s a great campus in terms of facilities with great lecturers that are both knowledgeable and very helpful.
