School of Arts Degree Show

Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 June 2025, 9:30am to 2:30pm

Britannia Mill Derby Campus, Mackworth Road, Derby, DE22 3BL

About the day

This exciting and interactive day will give Year 12 students the opportunity to explore our Made It Degree Show. The Degree Show is the culmination of our third-year students' time with us and allows them to showcase their passion and expertise.

Helping you to meet Gatsby Benchmarks 7, students will have the opportunity to tour the Degree Show, as well as take part in an interactive taster session from across our Art and Design portfolio, giving them an insight into that subject area and something to put towards their portfolio when applying to university.

The event will be based across our Britannia Mill and Markeaton Street sites, the home of our Arts courses at Derby. As part of the tour of the degree show, your students will also get the chance to see some of the amazing facilities and resources that our students get to use as part of their course.

Our workshops and sessions

As part of the day, your students will have the opportunity to take part in one subject taster session, alongside being able to tour the degree show.

On each day, we have the following sessions available. These are subject to availability and the numbers will be capped.

This session will explore the practical applications and the 12 core principles of animation, allowing students to put themselves in the shoes of current students and explore how we create movement with animation.

This session introduces participants to creative scoring, a dynamic approach that bridges visual art, mark making and musical improvisation. Designed for musicians, artists and creative explorers alike, the session delves into how visual forms can serve as compositional scores, unlocking new pathways for interpretation and expression in group music-making.

Through guided exercises, participants will experiment with mark-making techniques, using gesture, texture, and abstract visual symbols to create unique graphic scores.

This session focuses on the practical aspects of the course and allows students to look at the process from idea to garment. Students will take photographs of visuals they would like to produce and then work through the process of uploading these to create their own fashion item.

This session covers the basics of lighting and contrast, important for creating great visuals in film and High-End television. Students will get hands-on practice using professional cameras and equipment, learning how to shape light and control contrast to improve their shots. Perfect for emerging filmmakers.

This workshop, led by our academic team, will focus on the elements of Fine Art that our students cover across their time with us. It will explore different pathways that can be taken from the degree, and look at how broad this can be. Your students will also have the opportunity to try their hand at a practical activity that they can take away for their portfolio.

This workshop gives students the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a graphic design or illustration student at the University. Students will take part in a risograph printing workshop that will allow them to focus on creative exploration through drawing, typography and found imagery.

This activity will replicate a typical student's day, where you will work in teams to create a small design project, just as you would do as an Interior Designer. The activity is designed to showcase your students' teamwork skills and challenge their ability to think on their feet, all while having fun.

Students will learn the basics of filming a two-person interview using three cameras, while also experiencing the role of a gallery operator managing the live switch between shots. By the end of the session, students will have hands-on experience in multi-camera production, working as a team to create a polished two-person interview.

Whether your students are interested in a career in either abstract or commercial-based photography, our taster session will give them an insight into both. Our courses at Derby showcase the full breadth of photography, and the taster session would be no different, highlighting some of the facilities and resources we have at our disposal, such as Black and White darkrooms, chemical mixing and Keonite processing.

Our Sound, Light and Live Event Engineering course is all about preparing students for working in the live event industry. During the taster session, your students will be able to explore the different aspects required to run an amazing live event, from mixing sounds to controlling lighting shows and displays.
