Making it Real events

Bringing your students on-campus is the perfect opportunity to open their eyes to higher education, and inspire them to pursue their future career. Our visit days are filled with practical activities and talks from current students and staff experts, so your students can get a feel for studying at university, and how Derby can help them make their dreams real.  

You can mix and match a variety of sessions on your visit day, including:

  • Academic-led masterclasses and taster sessions
  • Student Ambassador-led campus tours
  • Student Ambassador Q&A panel
  • Alumni talks, to hear from graduates on how they made their dreams real
  • Information, advice and guidance sessions 

We can work with you to develop your visit day based on the timings and content that works best for you. therefore, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.  

Below you can also see an example of Criminology, Law, Policing and Social Science Make it Real event, to give a flavour of what we can offer.

This example is based on a 4-hour visit 

  • Welcome talk, including information about how to apply to university 
  • Choose from an Academic Masterclass in either:  
    • Criminology 
    • Law 
    • International Relations and Diplomacy 
    • Policing 
    • Sociology 
  • Extended tour of our facilities, including our Law Court, Custody Suite and our One Friar Gate Square site 
  • Choose a careers talk in either Criminology, Law, International Relations and Diplomacy or Policing
  • Student Q&A panel with current undergraduate students, to hear their experiences of studying at university 

Talks from our academics

We have a range of talks and masterclasses on offer, delivered by our academic experts, to showcase exciting topics and careers available within the criminal justice sector. These sessions can be delivered virtually, or in your school or college, and link to Gatsby Benchmarks 4 and 7.  

Our academics are experts in their field with experience in everything from criminology, law, policing and social science. 

Our experts can deliver masterclasses for your students, to excite them about the subject and support the curriculum they are learning on their Level 3 studies.

Virtual events

Our virtual events allow your students to access an interactive 20-minute outreach event at your convenience, so it can easily fit around your teaching plans. These events consist of an interactive webpage to help give your students a taste of what it is like to study these subject areas at university. You also have the option to follow up the session with an interactive activity with an academic. These sessions may help towards Gatsby Benchmark 7. 

Year group: Year 12/13 

Description: This virtual package will allow your students to get straight to the heart of the debate on issues which are shaping our society today. Students will create their own sociological scenario on how they would rebuild Britain after Covid-19, exploring impact on society and the economy. They will also hear from academics about what it is like to study sociology at university. They will be able to take a virtual tour and chat with our current students. There is also an option to arrange a live session with one of our academics to get feedback and follow up with an interactive activity.

The School of Law and Social Sciences encompasses law, criminology, policing and social sciences. Our courses spark debate, ignite curiosity and challenge students to think differently about criminal behaviour and social justice.
