Journalism and Media Outreach

We offer a range of activities, both on and off campus, that are perfect to excite your students across the breadth of Journalism and Media courses that we offer. We can run activities covering any of the following areas: Football Journalism, Journalism, Media Content Creation, and Specialist Sports Journalism.

We also offer outreach activities in related areas such as English, Creative Writing and Publishing and Film and Performance.

Whether it's part of a campus visit, an in-person session at your school or college, or a virtual experience, we're here to inspire and engage your students throughout the year. Some of our activities are set on particular dates throughout the academic year. If you are not able to make these particular dates, but are still interested, then please let us know and we can look to arrange a bespoke activity for you.

Taster Days

Our visit days allow your students to experience Derby fully and can be tailored to your and your group. All of our taster days include subject sessions, led by our passionate academic team. These sessions are aligned to the curriculum and will help prepare your students for further study. In addition to subject-based sessions, we can run Information, Advice and Guidance talks or campus tours to give your students an insight into university life.

Our talks and masterclasses are designed to be delivered when it is best for you. Aligned with the current curriculum, they will give your students an insight into our academic expertise and elevate their subject knowledge. A Masterclass in Reading Media

In this masterclass, students will focus on understanding important issues in society through the lens of media, feminism Marxism, psychoanalyst or queer readings from cultural media texts including film, television and radio.

This session can be delivered either in your school or college or at the University.

A Masterclass in Feminist Theory

Students will examine and learn the fundamentals of feminism. They will focus on how and when it first developed within the modern world, and look at the impact that the movement has had on today's society.

Smart Phone Journalism

You can do everything on your phone these days, right? In this masterclass, students will learn how to use their mobile phones as a journalist. We will look at how you can interview someone and learn the tips and tricks to ask the right question, how to frame your interviewee, get the best possible sound quality and how to use free editing software to make short videos.

This session can be delivered either in your school or college or at the University.

Creating Campaigns and Content

Have you ever been caught humming the advert jingle you heard hours ago? Chances are someone within their media or marketing team was responsible for that. In this masterclass, students will explore how journalism skills can be honed to create impactful PR for a variety of different brands, such as sports teams, fashion brands or businesses.

This session can be delivered either in your school or college or at the University.
