Hospitality, Spa, Tourism and Events

We provide a variety of on-site experience days focusing on hospitality, spa, tourism and events management for your level 3 students. These events are designed to give your students an insight into university life.

We are also able to provide a range of taster workshops for your students. These sessions can take place at either the University or your school or college. For more details and to book on-site events or taster sessions, please see the information below.

Description: Challenge your students to use their creative skills to plan their own Buxton Tourism Package. They will work with academics and current students to plan a weekend experience in Buxton, whilst learning more about hospitality, culinary arts, event management, tourism management and spa and wellness.  The winning group have the opportunity to visit the Devonshire Spa followed by a meal in the fine dining restaurant at the Devonshire Dome at a later date.*

Academic Taster Sessions

Description: We can provide a range of taster workshops for your students, either at the University or at your school or college. Examples of the types of tasters we can offer include:

  • Exciting career opportunities in culinary arts: This session will explore a range of exciting career opportunities in culinary arts. Staff will share their experiences of working in the industry and provide their tips for success. Students will take part in an activity where they are encouraged to think about where they want to be in eight years' time. This will include their personal and academic aspirations and will leave with an action plan to help them achieve their goals.
  • The future chef: This session provides students with an insight into the day to day life of a chef and the role of professional chef operations. This event will help students discover what studying Culinary Management is like at the University of Derby and the employment opportunities available in culinary arts.
  • Exploring a new venture: This session will focus on the creation and running of pop up food outlets and new food ideas. Students will gain an invaluable insight into how to run a successful culinary business and current trends in the industry.
  • Menu design and compilation: Within this session, students will design their own menus from the food served to the marketing and branding the restaurant. Students will think about how marketing is used to create an atmosphere and how food can be used as part of a brand.

  • Designing an event experience: This session will give students an insight to the concept of event planning. By designing their own event, students will have to think about pre planning considerations and budgets to create the ultimate events experience. 
  • Exploring Events: This session will highlight the evolution of events and their purpose in society, leaving students with essential knowledge about current trends within the industry and how they can progress their ideas and knowledge.
  • Day in the life of an events manager: This session provides students with an insight into the day to day life of an events manager and the running of a festival. This event will help students discover what studying Events Management is like at the University of Derby and the employment opportunities available in events.

  • The restaurant challenge: This session will allow students to explore and find solutions to challenges restaurant managers face. The session will give students an insight into the day to day running of a restaurant and knowledge of how to successfully run a business. 
  • Events and Experiences: This session looks at a scenario of an event and will allow students to make decisions and select ideas to successfully run the event. The session will give students an insight into the organising of an event within the hospitality industry. 
  • Increasing food and beverage sales: In this session, students will consider methods to increase food and drink sales. This session will give students invaluable knowledge about the hospitality industry alongside how to run a successful business.

  • Exciting career opportunities in spa management: This session will explore a range of exciting career opportunities in spa and wellness. Staff will share their experiences of working in the industry and provide their tips for success. Students will take part in an activity where they are encouraged to think about where they want to be in eight years' time, this will include their personal and academic aspirations and students will leave with an action plan to help them achieve their goals. 
  • Wellness in the workplace: In this scenario based task, students will define wellness and consider the benefits and challenges of workplace wellness programmes. In small groups students will become wellness co-ordinators and will be in charge of creating a workplace wellness programme for an inner city company based around 7 wellness principles. At the end, students will feed their ideas back to the group.
  • Day in the life of a spa/wellness manager: This session provides students with an insight into the day to day roles of a spa/wellness manager. Within the session, students will design their own spa or wellness centre from the mission statement to the decor. They will then present their design brief to the rest of the group. 
  • Spa etiquette: This session explores spa etiquette from various perspectives such as manager, therapist and customer. The session gives a unique insight into cultural differences in spas around the globe giving students essential information if they are looking at seeking employment abroad.

Students will take part in an activity where they are encouraged to think about where they want to be in eight years' time. This will include their personal and academic aspirations and students will leave with an action plan to help them achieve their goals.
  • The science and the art of the selfie: Students will take part in a research exercise by taking selfies around Buxton. The aim is to promote Buxton as a tourist destination by following an Ordinance Survey map on a specified route around Buxton. Students will choose their selfie location carefully and choose the picture they believe most effectively promotes Buxton positively as a tourist destination. At the end, students will complete a questionnaire to reflect on their choices and reasoning. (Only available at the Buxton Campus.) 
  • Day in the life of a tour organiser: The session provides students with an insight into the day to day life of a tour organiser and the arraying of tourists' itineraries. Students will plan a day trip itinerary of the local area and reflect on their choices and reasoning. This event will help students discover what studying Tourism Management is like at the University of Derby and the employment opportunities available in tourism.
