Making it Real events

Bringing your students on-campus is the perfect opportunity to open their eyes to higher education, and inspire them to pursue their future career. Our visit days are filled with practical activities and talks from current students and staff experts, so your students can get a feel for studying at university, and how Derby can help them make their dreams real.  

You can mix and match a variety of sessions on your visit day, including: 

  • Academic-led masterclasses and taster sessions 
  • Student Ambassador-led campus tours
  • Student Ambassador Q&A panel 
  • Alumni talks, to hear from graduates on how they made their dreams real 
  • Information, advice and guidance sessions 

Our Health and Social Care visit days can take place at either our Derby or Chesterfield sites, depending on your needs and your students’ subject areas of interest. We can work with you to develop your visit day based on the timings and content that works best for you. Therefore please get in touch to discuss your requirements. 

Below you can also see an example of a Making it Real event, to give a flavour of what we can offer.

This example is based on a 4-hour visit 

  • Welcome talk, including information about how to apply to health and social care courses at university 
  • Academic masterclasses:

    • What it's like to be a Diagnostic Radiographer 
    • The different touchpoints of Health, Social and Community Work
    • A day in the life of an Occupational Therapist
  • Extended tour of our facilities, including our NHS Mock Ward, Immersive Interactive Simulation Suite, Rehabilitation Kitchen, Diagnostic Imaging Suite, Library, Sports Centre and Union of Students 
  • Careers in Health and Social Care talk  
  • Student Q&A panel with current undergraduate students, to hear their experiences of studying at university 


Talks from our academics

We have a range of talks and masterclasses on offer, delivered by our academic experts, to showcase exciting topics and careers available across the health and social care sector. These sessions can be delivered virtually, or in your school or college, and link to Gatsby Benchmarks 4 and 7.  

Our academics are experts in their fields, with experience in everything from nursing and midwifery, to youth work. 

Our experts can deliver masterclasses for your students, to excite them about the subject and support the curriculum they are learning on their Level 3 studies.

Virtual events

Our virtual events allow your students to access an interactive 20-minute outreach event at your convenience, so it can easily fit around your teaching plans. These events consist of an interactive webpage to help give your students a taste of what it is like to study these subject areas at university.  You also have the option to follow up the session with an interactive activity with an academic.  These sessions may help towards Gatsby Benchmark 7.

DescriptionThis package offers students a virtual activity focused on health, social and community work and explores a common case study to discover the various roles involved in supporting the needs of individuals. Students can also find out more about studying at university and gain an understanding of the range of topics covered within our degree programmes. They will be able to take a virtual tour, hear from our academics and speak to current students. There is also an option to arrange a live follow-up session with one of our academics.

DescriptionAre your Year 12 students interested in a health and social care career but aren't sure which pathway to take? This virtual event package will discuss the variety of careers available in this rewarding sector and inform your students on how higher education can help them achieve their goals. Students will take part in an interactive activity - at a time that suits your school or college - discussing the skills needed in care professions and taking a virtual tour around our facilities.
