Engineering, Technology and Maths

We provide a range of on-site events focusing on engineering, technology and maths. These events are designed to give your students an insight into university life. We are also able to provide a range of taster workshops for your students. These sessions can take place at either the University or your school or college. Description: This event, based at our Derby Campus, will give your students the opportunity to experience the breadth of courses we have to offer. They will be able to talk to current students, speak with support services such as Admissions, and speak with academics about the courses available at Derby. Students will also receive a guided tour of our real world learning facilities and an optional tour of our Halls of Residence.

Description: Our Electronics and Mathematics team will take your students on a mathematical journey into (vector) space. We measure distances to a chessboard on the surface of the moon, play around with the mathematics of Tetris pieces, and learn about the orientations of diamonds tiling a hexagonal surface.

Description: This session looks at two of the core components of game development: game programming and game design. Your students will be introduced to the Unity development environment where they will undertake a session of familiarisation creating their first side scrolling 2D game. We will then expand the core framework as part of a micro-game-jam into something unique and fun.

Description: This interactive day introduces students to the secrets behind the most elegant and rare tricks of the mathematical trade. It not only covers the performance of magical effects, but also delves into the powerful theory that works behind the scenes. This taster serves as a ‘greatest hits’ demo to entry level mathematics at the University. Fun and surprising mathematics with true wow-factor will be presented (no dull arithmetic coincidences). Some of the tricks will continue to remain impressive and near-paradoxical, even after one uncovers their secrets.

Description: We will be hosting an inspiring programme of events showcasing science and engineering, as part of British Science Week.
Our festival of science will give your students the opportunity to attend several masterclass sessions around disciplines such as psychology, bioscience and engineering. These sessions will highlight the breadth of pathways that your students can follow at university and will let your students get a real feel for university level study.

Description: Computer games is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing entertainment industries, where specialists with the right mix of technical skills and artistic flair are in high demand. Students interested in computer games design or computer games programming are invited to visit the University to trial some of our third year undergraduate computer game creations for the first time. Your students will look around our facilities and learn about the world of gaming from our teaching staff, students and industry experts.

Description: In the design environment, creative thinking is vitally important. This session will introduce the essence of architectural thinking, finishing with a hands on workshop on design model-making. This interactive day provides an invigorating taste of the real-world practice performed by a professional architect. It will give your students the opportunity to see what studying Architecture at a CIAT (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) Centre of Excellence would be like.

Description: Are your students fascinated by the technology behind concerts and outside broadcasts? If so, this hands on session gives them the opportunity to set-up and use
industry relevant systems. Broadcast engineering and sound, light and live event technology is a constantly evolving area that requires highly skilled professionals who can keep up with the introduction of new technologies and techniques. Your students will gain an insight into the engineering behind these areas and will be able to get to grips with the latest technology.

Description: Our Engineering Explored Taster Day is designed to raise aspirations within the field of engineering, such as electrical and electronic engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and sound engineering. Held in the STEM Centre at our Markeaton Street site, the day offers a variety of taster sessions, and a chance to look around some of our amazing specialist facilities such as our Motorsport workshopElectrical and Renewable Energy lab and Hemi-Anechoic Chamber. It will also offer your students the chance to find out what exciting careers are available in this sector.
