Computing and Mathematics Winter School

This two-day non-residential event based at our Markeaton Street site on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 December, is aimed at students in Year 12 and 13, who have a keen interest in maths or computing, and who are ideally studying analytical and creative subjects such as maths, physics, engineering, and design and technology. The interactive subject sessions will give your students an insight into what it would be like to study at university.

Choose from two exciting fun and fast paced masterclasses!

A Course in Mathemagic

Mathematical theory has many intriguing applications towards jaw-dropping magical effects, with an air of mystery, beauty and surprising outcomes. This masterclass introduces your students to the secrets behind the tricks of the mathematical trade. These sessions serve as a 'greatest hits'-demo to entry level university mathematics at the University of Derby.

Day 1: Your students will take part in card magic invoking number sequences, rehearsing and performing tricks in small teams and be introduced to all of the basic mathematical theory behind the tricks.

Day 2: More mathematical magic! Including coin tricks blindfolded, Penney's game, Gilbreath card shuffle to name but a few.

Game Development 101

This masterclass looks at two of the core components of game development:

Day 1: Your students will be introduced to the Unity development environment where they will take part in a workshop of familiarisation creating their first side scrolling 2D game, then in the afternoon they will expand the core framework as part of a micro-game-jam into something unique and fun.

Day 2: Students will start to look at game design using traditional tools - they will be introduced to some of our favourite board games, dissect their mechanics and design before giving them the chance to dicuss how they can be improved.
