Making it Real events

Bringing your students on-campus is the perfect opportunity to open their eyes to higher education, and inspire them to pursue their future career. Our visit days are filled with practical activities and talks from current students and staff experts, so your students can get a feel for studying at university, and how Derby can help them make their dreams real. 

You can mix and match a variety of sessions on your visit day, including:

  • Academic-led masterclasses and taster sessions
  • Student Ambassador-led campus tours
  • Student Ambassador Q&A panel
  • Alumni talks, to hear from graduates on how they made their dreams real
  • Information, advice and guidance sessions

We can work with you to develop your visit day based on the timings and content that works best for you. Therefore please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

  • Welcome talk, including information about how to apply to university
  • Choose from an academic masterclass in:

  • An extended tour of our facilities, including our Financial Markets Lab, Library, Sports Centre and Union of Students

  • Student Q&A panel with current undergraduate students, to hear their experiences of studying at university

Talks from our academics

We have a range of talks and masterclasses on offer, delivered by our academic experts, to showcase exciting topics and careers available within the business sector. These sessions can be delivered virtually, or in your school or college, and link to Gatsby Benchmarks 4 and 7. 

Our academics are experts in their field, with experience in everything from developing marketing strategies for international businesses, to working in top Accounting firms across the UK. 

Our experts can deliver masterclasses for your students, to excite them about the subject and support the curriculum they are learning on their Level 3 studies.

Virtual events

Our virtual events allow your students to access an interactive 20-minute outreach event at your convenience, so it can easily fit around your teaching plans. These events consist of an interactive webpage to help give your students a taste of what it is like to study these subject areas at university.  You also have the option to follow up the session with an interactive activity with an academic.  These sessions may help towards Gatsby Benchmark 7.

Subject area: Accounting and Finance 

Year group: Year 12/13

Description: This package offers students a virtual activity focussing on a range of topics such as management accounting, audit and assurance, taxation and prioritisation which will give them an understanding of the range of topics covered within our programmes and the exercise touches on graduate skills and ways they can use knowledge gained in this session in their personal statement.  

Additionally, students can find out more about Accounting and Finance at University. They will be able to take a virtual tour around our Financial Markets Lab, hear from our academics, hear what our graduates have gone on to do and speak to current students.  There is also an option to arrange a live session with one of our academics to get feedback and follow up with an interactive activity.   

Book Accounting and Finance 101 virtual event

Description: This virtual package will allow your students to explore the UK high street and see how retailers have found trading conditions challenging in recent years. Focusing on three particular retailers, students will outline the 4P’s marketing mix followed by an activity that will allow them to put what they’ve learnt into practice. Students will be able to hear from academics about our courses, speak to our current students and hear what a graduate has gone on to do.  There is also an option to arrange a live session with one of our academics to get feedback and follow up with an interactive activity.  

Book Marketing and the High Street virtual event

Description:  This virtual package is designed for students who are considering studying International business at University. Students will hear from our International business programme leader and find out what it is like to study this interesting course at university. They can then complete an interactive quiz which will cover all aspects of international business, to give them of a taste of what they still be studying on the programme. They will be able to take a virtual tour and chat with our current students. There is also an option to arrange a live session with one of our academics to get feedback and follow up with an interactive activity.
