Making it Real events

Bringing your students on-campus is the perfect opportunity to open their eyes to higher education, and inspire them to pursue their future career. Our visit days are filled with practical activities and talks from current students and staff experts, so your students can get a feel for studying at university, and how Derby can help them make their dreams real. 

You can mix and match a variety of sessions on your visit day, including:

  • Academic-led masterclasses and taster sessions
  • Student Ambassador-led campus tours
  • Student Ambassador Q&A panel
  • Alumni talks, to hear from graduates on how they made their dreams real
  • Information, advice and guidance sessions

We can work with you to develop your visit day based on the timings and content that works best for you. Therefore please get in touch to discuss your requirements. 

Below you can also see an example of a Art and Design Making it Real event, to give a flavour of what we can offer. 

This example is based on a 4-hour visit 

  • Welcome talk, including information about how to apply to art and design courses  
  • One Academic Masterclass such as Photography, Mask Making (Graphic Design and Illustration) or Story Based Image Making (Therapeutic Arts) 
  • Extended tour of our facilities, including our Fashion, Music and Art studios  
  • Careers in Art and Design talk 
  • Student Q&A panel with current undergraduate students, to hear their experiences of studying at university 

Talks from our academics

We have a range of talks and masterclasses on offer, delivered by our academic experts, to showcase exciting topics and careers available within the art and design sector. These sessions can be delivered virtually, or in your school or college, and link to Gatsby Benchmarks 4 and 7. 

Our academics are experts in their field, and many are artists and designers. With experience in everything from designing to writing, performance to education and curating to publishing.  

Our experts can deliver masterclasses for your students, to excite them about the subject and support the curriculum they are learning in their Level 3 studies.

Virtual events

Our virtual events allow your students to access an interactive 20-minute outreach event at your convenience, so it can easily fit around your teaching plans. These events consist of an interactive webpage to help give your students a taste of what it is like to study these subject areas at university. You also have the option to follow up the session with an interactive activity with an academic. These sessions may help towards Gatsby Benchmark.

Year group: Year 12/13

Description: This virtual package will allow your students to explore their drawing skills and delve into creative knowledge and understanding that is gained through observation and imagination. Students can also find out more about studying at university and gain an understanding of the range of topics covered within our programme. They will be able to take a virtual tour, hear from our academics and speak to current students. There is also an option to arrange a live follow-up session with one of our academics.

Year Group: Years 12/13

Description: This virtual package will allow your students to explore making of marks which often starts and underpins the entire design process, mark making is an integral part to all areas of design. Students can also find out more about studying at university and gain an understanding of the range of topics covered within our programme. They will be able to take a virtual tour, hear from our academics and speak to current students. There is also an option to arrange a live follow-up session with one of our academics.
