Art and Design

We provide a range of on-site events focusing on art and design. These events are designed to give your students an insight into university life. We are also able to provide a range of taster workshops for your students. Sessions can take place at the University and some at your school or college. Description: This event, based at our Derby Campus, will give your students the opportunity to experience the breadth of courses we have to offer. They will be able to talk to current students, speak with support services such as Admissions, and speak with academics about the courses available at Derby. Students will also receive a guided tour of our real world learning facilities and an optional tour of our Halls of Residence.

Description: A practical drawing and painting experience with Edward Sutcliffe, a London based artist, teacher and educational consultant. Students will learn new skills to help strengthen their coursework, understand more about portfolio development and the specialist art and design facilities that we offer.

Description: This hands on event will allow students to explore a variety of creative subjects in subject areas such as animation, illustration and graphic design. During the day students will hear from our alumni, speak to current students and explore our excellent facilities.

Description: Our annual Music Production Show is a great opportunity for students to hear from industry professionals in panel discussions as well as getting involved in masterclasses. Students will also be able to speak with current students about studying at the University, and see the great facilities available.

Festival of the Arts

During the month of June, we will be hosting a number of events celebrating the arts. As well as our specific Schools and Colleges day of the Degree Show, there are also opportunities to attend the public exhibition, fashion show, and film premiere. Contact us for further information.

Description: This is an inspirational opportunity for your students, who may be considering studying a creative or engineering course at university. They can find out more about portfolios and be given a VIP tour of our fantastic showcase of final year student work, followed by an interactive workshop inspired by their tour.

Description: This two-day event is perfect for anyone with an interest in music and film. It will allow students to experience a variety of aspects of music and sound to accompany a video. There will be hints and tips on filming, editing on Premier Pro in our Mac Labs, creative enhancing of footage and opportunities to try a variety of musical experiences using our recording studios and Apple Logic and Ableton Live software. This will culminate in the final film to take away.

Academic Taster Sessions

Description: In this practical workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore energetic contemporary technique and creative choreography work. Working with Programme Leader, Alice Marshall, the participants will get the chance to see the work that is explored on the dance degree and to explore their individual creativity and movement qualities.

Description: This interactive session covers what it is like to study media at the University of Derby and focuses on the career opportunities available in the field. Students will explore media culture such as the contemporary movie industry and zombies in popular culture!

Title: Creative Futures: Your first step towards a career in media
Description: We can provide a range of taster workshops for your students, either at the University or at your school or college. Examples of the types of tasters we can offer include:

Lights, camera, action (Live TV presentation and direction)
Present and/or direct an as-live television programme in the TV studio using existing scripts and VT clips.
Imaginative editing: (Audio-visual editing)
Using existing audio and video footage edit material to a given brief using Adobe software and iMacs.
Creating an impression: (Digital/print publishing)
Students will edit a mock-up magazine cover or poster using Adobe software and iMacs.
On-air entertainment: (Live radio production)
Present and produce a short radio programme for a student audience using pre-prepared script and music in the radio studios.

Title: The same sky - The writing of a musical
Description: This session will include a talk outlining the compositional aspects of writing a musical, together with organisational constraints considered in the launch of an original piece for theatre.

Title: Modular synthesis
Description: Modular synthesisers were huge in the 1960's and 70's and have recently made a big comeback. Academics will demonstrate how you can create sounds ranging from the deepest of basses to Star Wars sound FX in this fun and interactive session.

Description: In this session students will receive portfolio advice and have the opportunity to discuss career options and pathways with our academics. Students will also have the chance to see examples of current students work and receive advice about entry requirements. This is a stand alone session, but following this there is the option to plan a bespoke visit to the University to allow students to explore our real world learning facilities. Alternatively, students can book onto our practical three day non-residential Arts Summer School.
