Student Ambassador Scheme

Are you proud to study at the University of Derby? Are you passionate about your course and keen to share your experiences about university with others? If the answer is yes, you may be interested in applying to be a Student Ambassador or TAP Ambassador.

Why join and who can apply?

Are you looking for:

  • Paid employment - Our Ambassadors are paid a competitive rate
  • Flexible hours - You choose the hours you want to work
  • The opportunity to develop presentation, group work and networking skills
  • A boost to your CV
  • Activities to add to your Higher Education Record of Achievement (HEAR)

The University of Derby Ambassador scheme employs undergraduate students to work with prospective students in a variety of settings such as Open Days, working in schools and colleges supporting the delivery of information, advice and guidance sessions to prospective students as well as supporting enquiries via our online platform TAP.

Ambassador roles support our thriving and inclusive culture and enable prospective students from under-represented groups to engage with university life. Promoting diversity and inclusion is a priority for the University and the diversity of our student body must be reflected within our Ambassador and TAP schemes.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and actively encourage students who identify with a Black, Asian and minority ethnic background to apply for these student-facing roles.

Please note, at the moment we are only accepting applications from first, second and third-year undergraduate students.

Student Ambassadors work with the Marketing department and Widening Access Team to help promote higher education and the University of Derby to prospective school and college students.

We work with students from Years 7-13, promoting the idea of Higher Education by using informative presentations, workshops, activities and visit days including working on our Open Days and giving campus tours. These events are supported by our Student Ambassadors who will provide their own personal experiences of university, work with groups to dispel myths and show students around the University and other student-related areas such as Halls of Residence and the Union of Students.

Student Ambassadors will be expected to have a professional manner, an ability to work in a team, confidence to talk to new people, a passion for their degree subject and an enthusiastic approach to working with young people and inspiring them to want to progress into higher education.

There are development opportunities available throughout your time as an Ambassador.

You will be expected to work on most Open Days, which are mainly on Saturdays.

TAP (The Ambassador Platform) is a peer-to-peer chat platform that enables our current students to have conversations about their university experience with prospective students.

TAP Ambassadors work with the Marketing department to promote the University and answer a variety of questions based on their own experiences. They are expected to have a professional manner, confidence to talk to a variety of enquirers, and a passion for their degree subject and life as a student.

Below are some comments from Ambassadors who have worked for the team previously:

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working for you during my three years at Derby and have gained many skills which I will be able to apply to my teaching. Thank you for making my time working here so enjoyable."

"Being an ambassador was what got me out of my fear of public speaking so very thankful for that experience."

"I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and the rest of the team for improving my skills throughout the past two years and it has helped equip me ready for my career."

Julie Clough - Student Ambassador Line Manager

I’ve worked with Ambassadors on many events, delivering sessions in schools and colleges, on summer schools and at recruitment fairs. It is one of my favourite parts of the job, watching current students grow and develop while they are working with us. I am really proud to be the first point of contact and Line Manager for all aspects of the Ambassador scheme at the University, and as a team we work hard to offer students the best possible rewarding experience and opportunities while working with us.

The scheme is a great opportunity to develop your skills, build your confidence and get some real work experience. In return we offer you a good rate of pay, opportunities to develop and constructive feedback to help you get ready for the world of work.

Thank you for your interest in the scheme and I wish you every success with your application.
