Spring masterclass series

Our masterclasses are designed to give your students the experience of being an undergraduate student. Each session will last between 1.5 - 2 hours and will cover a topic linked to the current curriculum. The masterclass series will cover 3 different subjects including: maths, english and psychology. 

Maths masterclass - A mathematical journey into (vector) space

Location: Kedleston Road, Derby
This workshop will take you on a mathematical journey into (vector) space with some lesser known applicants of vectors, such as: squares of distances to a chessboard that has ascended to the moon, the spectrum of orientations of diamond-shaped tiles on a grid of triangles, and the surprising map topography formed by T-shaped Tetris pieces on a rectangle. 

English masterclass - Sound and meaning

This 90-minute taster session will introduce key aspects of phonetics and phonology, inviting students to consider the articulation of English consonants as well as analysing syllable structure. It will then progress to an analysis of the interaction of sound and meaning in the poem ‘Anthem for a Doomed Youth’ by Wilfred Owen. The session will include a variety of activities in which students can put the concepts introduced into practice, discuss their ideas and ask questions

Psychology masterclass - Schizophrenia

Date: Wednesday 10 April 2019

The schizophrenia master class will consist of a one-hour lecture followed by a one-hour seminar. The material will be drawn directly from the AQA A level syllabus, but the material will include some slightly more advanced concepts, to allow students to experience what it is like to study at university. The content of the session will cover the following: Classification and symptoms of schizophrenia, Biological causes, psychological causes and treatments for schizophrenia
