Third year LLB student, Alex Cherry, is currently being mentored by Andrew Cochrane, Senior Partner at Flint Bishop Solicitors. We spoke to both of them about their experiences of mentoring and their impressions of Derby Law School.

Alex Cherry: student

How has your mentor been helping you?

“Andrew has provided me with a lot of helpful advice about applying for positions at law firms. He has set up meetings with other solicitors practising in my area of interest, and also with his own firm’s HR department, to look over my CV, covering letters and applications.

“As well as this he has provided me with paid part-time work within his firm.”

How is the LLB helping you prepare for your future career?

“The course has been incredible at preparing me. I have learned and developed skills such as negotiating, mooting, interviewing, witness examination and more, most of which other law students won’t look at until their LPC or training contract. It has equipped me with masses of academic legal knowledge while providing me with practical skills and commercial awareness.

“As well as this the staff provide plenty of assistance including interview practice, career advice, networking opportunities and several schemes with the local profession to help improve your employability and professional networks.”

What do you plan to do after the LLB?

“I am currently applying for training contracts and graduate schemes. I plan to either train as a solicitor and go into corporate or commercial law, or go into business consultancy. I want to be involved with the commercial world, whether it is inside or outside of the legal profession.”

Andrew Cochrane: Mentor

What is your role at Flint Bishop?

“I am a senior partner at Flint Bishop, specialising in licensing law. I'm part of the Commercial Dispute Resolution Department."

Why did you become involved in mentoring at the University of Derby?

“The role that the University of Derby has played in the community in recent years has been noticed and very much welcomed and it seems appropriate to give something back. I also enjoy sharing my experiences.”

What is your overall impression of Derby Law School and its students?

“Very positive. All the students we have seen come across as being well taught and motivated.

“Alex is always very smart and turns up for meetings punctually. He seems very enthusiastic about the prospect of being a corporate lawyer and we are now engaging him in some part-time paralegal work.”
