“Don't wait - go for it! The world belongs to the brave ...”
– Tomasz Madej

Tomasz is the joint winner of The Lucy Ann Butcher Memorial Prize in 2009.

Winning the award

It's an honour for me to win this prize. It's very kind that someone decided I should win it and I appreciate it. This will certainly motivate me in my future career.

Why Derby?

After graduating from Liceum sw. Bernarda OO Cystersow in Krakow I was not sure what course I want to do and where to study. After looking at the Derby website and talking to the programme leader I decided Derby was the right place for me.

Meeting international students, the professional and friendly approach, and the opportunity to go abroad and learn a new language all convinced me to study here.

The best part of the course

The best part was going to Spain to study for 5 months. I really enjoyed this time and not only learned Spanish but also travelled a lot and experienced the Spanish culture.

But when I think about Derby University several things are on my mind: international friends, motivating and expert lecturers, opportunity to go abroad as a part of a course, Enterprise Inc Programme and Career Development Centre.

What now?

I currently live in the Netherlands and I'm studying MBA Management Consulting programme at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. I'm also working as a buyer in Aalsmer Flower Market and often use my language abilities - Spanish and Polish - to deal with clients. I'm also engaged in the Enterprise Inc programme (formerly SPEED) and I'm working on my business idea.

I've been able to use the skills I learned at Derby on a daily basis, enabling me to deal effectively with international people, work in a team and organise myself.

My advice

I strongly recommend studying International Business at Derby. It will be a valuable investment in yourself. You'll expand your horizons, meet interesting people from around the world and get the chance to advance their professional career.
