Sam Hughes, HND in Business and Management
The HND in Business and Management opened up a world of opportunities for Sam Hughes. As soon as he finished his course, he headed to Croatia for a summer working with the world’s number one tourism business.
As he completed his final HND assignments, Sam submitted a successful job application to the TUI Group. He spent the season as a Sports, Entertainment and Wellbeing Leader at a hotel in Pula – organising events such as wine tastings, walking tours, football matches and quiz nights – before returning to take his studies to the next level.
“I gained practical experience in the world of business as well as life skills – while being able to see other parts of Europe on my time off. My HND studies empowered me to adapt to such a role and gave me the confidence to throw myself into anything, no matter how diverse,” he says.
He originally chose the HND because of its flexibility and the option to ‘top-up’ his qualification to a full honours degree. “That was the biggest attraction for me at that point in my career,” he explains. “The HND programme gave me a recognised qualification after two years but also offered me a choice about how long and how far I took my higher education.”
One of the highlights of his studies was the Innovation and Knowledge Transfer assignment where he and fellow students were taken behind the scenes at Derbyshire County Cricket Club to see how it is managed as a business. “Cricket is my favourite sport so integrating it into my degree as ‘work’ was something I found enthralling,” he enthuses.
His next step is to complete the BA (Hons) Business Management with another year of full-time study at Derby. He says: “I opted to return to the University because I loved my time on the HND so I would not want to change.”
Sam particularly enjoyed studying in Derby, which he describes as: “a city that’s not too large, so you can feel involved with everything it has to offer.”
He also praises HND Programme Leader Paul Dale for helping to steer him to success. He concludes: “The HND has a very engaging team of lecturers. Paul’s constant support and belief in me is one of the main reasons I’m striding into my top-up year with the confidence to achieve the top grade in Business Management. Just try stopping me!”
