Luke Taplin, BA (Hons) Marketing and Advertising Management
My placement experience
My placement is at Canon UK’s head office in Reigate with my official title being ‘Product & Business Development Specialist’. I work within the Marketing department, with a consumer facing role. Specifically, I am a Product Manager for the Accessories product group across the imaging spectrum.
I work on road mapping product launches, implementing new campaigns and considering all aspects of product marketing such as market intelligence, promotion and communications. This is all alongside frequent updates and presentations throughout the company.
My tutors encouraged me to look for placement vacancies online, particularly Kuldeep Banwait. My web application lead to a phone interview from which I was invited to a group assessment centre. This was strangely like being in an episode of The Apprentice. I can’t stress enough how well Derby Business School and in particular the Employer Engagement lead Bev Crighton prepared me for this.
Helping my career progression
I believe my placement experience will very much assist my future career. My personal development has increased dramatically so far in my placement. Actually applying certain models and theories to real life, seeing your actions being implemented and seeing results, all being facilitated by such a huge company has taught me so much already. I think my employability as a graduate will be increased tremendously also – which is why I came to Derby in the first place.
So many opportunities
During my very first weeks I presented at the QUAD arts centre in Derby which was extremely daunting, and at the end of first year I was asked to be a representative alongside a few others at the Derby Business School showcase event.
In my 2nd year I attended lots of networking events. These have been phenomenal, particularly attending the ‘VIP - Derby Arena Launch’; an exclusive event, where I got to meet Steve McClaren!
I can’t stress enough how proud I am to be a University of Derby student, and how grateful I am to the staff, especially those mentioned.
I’ve had a phenomenal two years at Derby. It’s truly been fantastic, and I already can’t wait to return!
