“I've gained an appreciation of business as a whole and have a better understanding of the complexities of the various functions needed to effectively and efficiently run an organisation”
– Libby Beck
Libby is studying HND Business and Management.
A future goal
Whilst I'm happy in my role as Placement Officer my career goal is to move more into the lecturing field. To be able to do this I need to successfully complete my HND, and then top up to a degree.
A supportive environment
After being out of structured learning for a long time it was a challenge for me even to take the first step of deciding to take the HND. However, it's a decision that I will never regret. Studying my HND has given me the confidence to move onto my degree once I have completed the course. All the lecturers are supportive and friendly and there are lots of opportunities to ask questions and interact during the lectures.
A relevant qualification
The lectures have all been in subjects that are relevant to my role in the faculty. I've studied marketing, accounting, logistics, business systems and organisational behaviour. I've gained an appreciation of business as a whole and have a better understanding of the complexities of the various functions needed to effectively and efficiently run an organisation. Put simply the lecturers at Derby bring these subjects to life.
A balancing act
Combining work, studying and home life can be difficult at times, especially when an assignment deadline is looming, but if you start work on your assignments early and plan time every week to do some work. My motto is little and often.
The right place for you
I would definitely recommend studying a part time course at Derby. It's a friendly and supportive learning environment, lecturers have an open door policy and you can email or call them with any questions you may have. Also, the curriculum is focussed on the skills that you need in business, which gives the learning experience a real-life element.
