“Without doubt the placement year was extremely valuable as it provided me with invaluable experience in getting the job I wanted”
– Laura Biggs

Laura studied the BA (Hons) Marketing (which has now changed to BA (Hons) Marketing and Brand Management).

Why choose Derby?

I researched several universities but felt that the marketing degree offered at the University of Derby had the best modules to enhance my career prospects.

Compared to courses at other universities the learning outcomes from each module offered a skill which could be used in my future career.

Another bonus was lecturers were all ex business people, which meant they had a wealth of knowledge which related to the modules being studied and talked about their experiences with students. Not only this, I also felt the Uni had fantastic facilities to help me with all areas of my studies.

The course was really hands on

I felt the best part of studying the course was the hands on approach of using real case studies which enabled me to combine theory with real life business situations. The lecturers were very supportive and always available to offer advice. Without doubt the placement year was extremely valuable as it provided me with invaluable experience in getting the job I wanted.

The lecturers were extremely friendly and supportive. They were approachable and always made time for you whenever help was needed. They also provided plenty of support whilst on my placement year and when I began my career.

I felt the course provided me with plenty of preparation for my career. Modules studied were all relevant to the job that I have today. Lecturers also talked about their past experiences of the business world, which provided me with an excellent insight into what a career in marketing would be like.

There was never a dull moment

The student life was fantastic! There was always something going on! Events are organised by the students union, there is plenty to see and do with lots of bars, a new shopping centre and lots of other attractions. There was never a dull moment! There is also a May Ball at the University which takes place every year. There was something for everyone almost every night of the week! I made lots of friends who I still keep in touched with, even though I commuted from Leicester.

Looking to the future

I started my career almost immediately after receiving my degree classification, working as a Product Manager which sees me innovating and marketing beauty products for some of the UK's major retailers. It's a very fast paced environment and I manage multiple products. However it's really rewarding seeing one of your products in a major retailer!

I already knew that I wanted to be a Product Manager when I started studying at Derby so the modules studied were very important and combined with work experience on my placement year, helped me gain a competitive advantage over other candidates for the job. Again, lecturers were always on hand to offer advice on all aspects and helped me to achieve my study and career goals.

My future plans now are to climb as high as I can up the career ladder! I am doing the job that I went to Uni to do so it's a case of progressing through my career as far as I can! I am also planning on studying towards a Masters at the University of Derby.

The University overall offers fantastic courses and facilities, which are vital in helping you to succeed. Most importantly the support and advice is there in choosing your career and reaching your goal in a competitive industry today. I would strongly recommend the University of Derby to anyone who wants to achieve and excel in their future career.
