“Being an intern is the best undergraduate opportunity available. I am working in a real job that is necessary and vital to the company.” So says BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance student Katharine Challen, who is currently employed on a year-long placement with Porsche Retail Group.
Katharine, who is based in Reading working as a finance-banking intern, adds: “I believe taking a placement is vital to your graduate success. Simply having a degree no longer differentiates you from others; experience is the key factor that employers are seeking.”
Such is her belief in the importance of industrial experience that she actually undertook another placement – with ADP Dealer Services – for two months before her current role began.
In addition to her wide-ranging banking and financial responsibilities at Porsche, she has attended a series of training courses on themes such as inter-personal effectiveness. She explains: “They have improved my general business manner and my confidence in approaching people at different levels of the hierarchy. These are important transferable skills that can help in both future employment and at university.”
