Derby Business School Student Profiles Karen Melidone

“The fantastic feeling when you hand in that assignment is only beaten by the even more fantastic feeling you have when you find out that you have passed it!”
Karen Melidone

Karen Melidone is studying a BA (Hons) Accounting, Human Resource Management and Business Management Joint Honours degree. She balances studying for her degree with an (almost) full time job.

Why I chose this degree

I work in a small school for permanently excluded pupils. I work in the office and as we are such a small school I have a lot of involvement with the pupils.  I've always worked in administration and accounting, so decided to aim for a degree in this area which would also allow me the option in the future to teach this subject.

I am doing a joint honours degree combining Accounting, Human Resources and Business Management which I hope to 'open doors' in to the role of School Manager or Bursar. As the joint honours programme is so flexible, it has allowed me to incorporate studying with almost full time work and my family. I've had to choose modules that fit around these restrictions, some of which I've been able to access online, but as there are many to choose from, this hasn't been a problem. I've received help and support from programme advisors and tutors in helping me to organise this.

Well planned lectures

I've enjoyed the Accounting modules and have found the lecturers very helpful and supportive. They have understood that, being a mature student, I have many other obligations and have always given me encouragement. The lectures are very well planned, giving all students the required information and allowing plenty of time to put what we have learned into practice. I was well prepared for the exams and the coursework that was required.

Making friends

I've made many friends while studying and have found many other students in very similar circumstances. Together we have been able to encourage and help each other. I've had to work with others to prepare group presentations. These are quite daunting and frightening at first, but I've got to know a lot of other students this way and it's been fun and great experience for similar situations in the workplace.

Beyond the classroom

I've made use of many of the facilities at Derby University. The Students Union have put on some really good live entertainment and the book shop has always got stock of the books I need. I'm halfway through my second year and still finding new services provided by the Library.

The University has many social events, and if I had more time I'd love to participate in more!

The best bits

I've experienced many highs and lows throughout my time studying. The fantastic feeling when you hand in that assignment is only beaten by the even more fantastic feeling you have when you find out that you have passed it! To the lows of not passing, not getting the grade you hoped for, or feeling that you can't do this. However, with the encouragement of friends and lecturers you pick yourself up and carry on because you know that you can do it and it is all worth it in the end!
