Emma Hodgkinson, BA (Hons) Marketing and Advertising Management
I was really apprehensive about leaving university to undergo a placement for a year but I can honestly say it was the best decision I have ever made. It allowed me to actually experience what we learn and read about within textbook and journals.
Looking back I think my greatest depth of learning is that you just have to be open-minded and ready to tackle any challenge on a placement programme and throughout your whole career.
I happened to work in an area of the business that I would never have imagined myself working within, whereby marketing wasn’t necessarily the key focus. At first this felt like a challenge but it allowed me the great opportunity and chance to suggest alternative approaches to projects from my marketing prospective and act as a fresh pair of eyes.
My placement role was very varied and my team worked on many different up and coming projects.
Having 'development' in my title was really exciting because it meant I got to try and look into the ‘customers mind’ through insights and observations, thinking about their future needs and wants and the challenges they face.
I loved my placement role because it involved looking after our customers and continually thinking about how to make our offering even better. Customers want a company to offer much more than just a product or a service, they want a tailored personal service and that is what I was able to do - tailor the customer offer.
The University of Derby has equipped me with the skills and understanding I needed to do well and progress in my career.
