Chloe Farmer - Undergraduate - University of Derby

“Studying at the University of Derby definitely gave me the skills that employers are looking for”
Chloé Farmer

BA (Hons) International Business graduate Chloé Farmer is putting her skills and knowledge to good use in promoting an iconic luxury knitwear brand to customers worldwide.

Having gained a first class honours degree at the University of Derby, Chloé secured a job as Customer Service Administrator (E-Commerce) with John Smedley Ltd at Lea Mills.

With a rich heritage stretching back almost 230 years, the company has a global reputation for high-quality knitwear and features regularly in the world’s most prestigious fashion magazines.

Chloé says that the skills she developed at the University certainly boosted her employability and performance at work. “My role involves engaging with customers from all over the world,” she explains. “I use my cultural knowledge to communicate with them effectively. I also use my leadership skills to prioritise and ensure that we are working as efficiently as possible.”

She praises the International Business course as “really interesting and exciting.”  She especially appreciated the chance to work on real-world case studies with local companies; the supportive lecturers who were always open to new ideas; and the variety of ways the course was assessed, which helped her develop strong presentation and writing skills that she uses every day at work.

A particular highlight was the opportunity in her final year to work with international students from Spain and other countries. “I learnt a lot about different cultures and made a few lifelong friends along the way.”

Not that Chloé is resting on her laurels. She is now balancing her work commitments with studying for an MSc Marketing Management at the University to broaden her knowledge further still and add an extra dimension to her CV.

A sports enthusiast, Chloé took full advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities at the University – in fact, one reason she originally chose to study at Derby was so that she could continue wakeboarding with her local club and playing hockey.

She says: “The introduction of Team Derby Fitness mid-way through my course was a great addition to my student experience. It enabled me to combine studying with a healthy lifestyle.”

She also played a key role with the Students’ Union, which she describes as “one of the best things I could have done.” Having led the women’s hockey club, she successfully ran for the paid position of Athletic Union President, for which she took a year out. “I felt empowered and gained so much confidence,” she comments.

Chloé concludes that she would recommend the University of Derby to anyone seeking a high quality education and an excellent student experience.

“It provides you with great facilities; friendly and helpful tutors who really do go the extra mile for you; and a wide range of sports from competitive to recreational. I also guarantee that you will make friends for life!”
