With her sights set on a career as a management accountant, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance student Alice Thornhill feels the University of Derby has given her all the direction she needs to achieve her ambitions.
“The University is really supporting me to get to where I want to go,” she says. “The lecturers are incredibly helpful and friendly. They have helped me develop my career by suggesting a placement year, enabling me to gain valuable experience that others may lack on graduation. They have also explained the choices which will give me the greatest exemptions from my professional examinations.”
Now preparing to embark on a junior accounts placement with composite engineering company EPM Technology, Alice chose the course at Derby because of the strong career prospects it offers. She comments: “In every business there is an accounts team, so I thought the chances of getting a job at the end of my degree were greater.
“I’ve found the work on the course to be very interesting and stimulating. The variety of accounting functions I’ve studied has allowed me to find which area suits me best. I’ve also enjoyed applying theory to real-life situations, which has given me a deeper understanding of the concepts of accounting.”
Alice concludes: “I would definitely recommend a degree at Derby as the tutors support you to succeed and do well. If you work hard, you will graduate with a degree to be proud of. The atmosphere of the University is great too – vibrant, lively and welcoming.”
